Remote Power On for Macs?

Post by Resonant Alien »

Does anyone know of a way to remotely power on a Mac? The Cinema Display buttons can put it to sleep and wake it up, but I can't find anyway to actually power ON a Mac except by actually pressing the power button on the Mac itself. I am putting my Mac in a different room to get rid of the noise, and I would like to not have to go in that room every time to power up.

Ideas?

This is a hard solution (hard on the computer, that is). If you set your Mac to auto-start after power failure and place it on an electrical outlet that has a switch, or long extension cord, or some other remote on/off (timer, fancy device at the big box hardware store, etc) then simply turning on/off the power at the wall will start/stop the mac. Not the best way as it is a bit of a "shock therapy" approach, but I don't think there is another way to do this "on the fly."

Alternatively, you could set the power management to start and stop on a schedule (Preferences>Energy Saver>Schedule). OR maybe seet the computer to simply sleep and "wake for admin access" then do some admin access to wake the machine. That is probably your best bet, but it means leaving the machine on. Frankly, I never shut ANY of my computers - EVER - unless I am going away for a week or more.
