Hi,

i have a problem with my motu traveler on a mac pro 2.66 and latest
OS-X patches. I have already re-installed a clean OS-X, but the
problem remains. Sometimes when i try to launch an audio program like
quicktime or logic pro, there is no music... only small
clipping/peeping/strange noises. You don't hear any music.
When i close the program and reopen, it sometimes works, it sometimes
doesn't work.

The drivers that i use are the latest from motu.com, i have also
installed the firmware 1.07 but the problem still exists. There are
no other firewire devices connected to my mac pro.

How does this come ? I had used the traveler before on my ibook, but
the problem never existed.

I have this very same thing going on with my 828mk2. Motu's drivers aren't working right with coreaudio. For me DP works ok, but like you said, problem (peeping) appears when you use other programs.

Hi,
I would try using a pciX-firewire card, I don't know why but have seen a few posts of mates having issues with new Intel based Macs and Firewire interfaces.

I have the same Problem with a C2D E6600 and Windows Xp. New Driver and all Updates can not fix the Problem. I hate my Motu 828 MK II, can somebody help me ? I call the Motu Support but the can not help me

Same thing is when I use QT movie with DP. If OSX's Audio settings are set to Motu, there will be no sound from DP (but peeping). I have to change OSX's Core audio back to Mac internal, then DP will work again.
So Motu's fw drivers can't hold two programs together.
I'm not sure when this started, but with earlier OSX or Motu drivers everything worked ok with this very same 828mk2.

Thank you for your email.


Please try the following for your Firewire interface:


- Try a factory reset - push the Setup knob, turn it all the way to the right and follow the directions on the LCD. (828 mk II, Traveler and UltraLite ONLY)
- Try setting both your Optical Input and Optical Output in the MOTU Console to ADAT.
- Try a different Firewire cable.
- Try removing all other Firewire devices.
- Try different Firewire ports.
- Try toggling the red voltage switch on the right side of the unit with the unit OFF. Do this 5 or 6 times, then set it to the correct position and try again. (not applicable to Traveler or UltraLite)
- Try powering the unit via Firewire or DC power (Traveler and UltraLite ONLY)

- Try the unit with a different computer, if possible.

- If you use a PCI Firewire card, check to make sure your card uses the Texas Instruments or Lucent chipset.

- Try reinstalling drivers:


Goto Macintosh HD > System > Library > Extensions
and trash the file, "MOTU Firewire Audio.kext."

Go into the Applications folder and trash all 3 MOTU Consoles. Empty the trash.

Reboot your machine, run a Repair Disk Permissions from your Apple Disk Utility, then reinstall our most recent drivers
from our website being sure that unit is NOT turned on.
Reboot and turn on your device.

I have the exact same problem both on my Powermac and my new MacBook.

If I reset the Traveler it most often works but sometimes not. I think it's horrible that a serious company like Motu does'nt create a fix for the problem.
If I had known about this problem I would have NEVER bought the Traveler. So please Motu release a fix for this problem cause it can't be that hard right?

Im in complete agreement with the last post, this is ridiculous, as for the first and original quote im having the exact same problem, to be more specific i have a Macbook Pro 2.33, OSX 10.4.8/9 and of course a Traveler. I have a bleep digital clicking sound on the output of each channel and have complete up-to-date firmware and software inc. drivers? The Firewire cable is fine, the settings are all correct and have tried every single alternative set-up, im at my wits end here and am pretty pissed, hope finding this forums going to help and the amount of replies im looking at here it aint no firewire cable problem. Cheers for any support..................

I even have problems with iTunes. I was playing a radio capture (Audio Hijack Pro) and I kept getting the weird beeping/hiccuping, though it was something I did during the Hijack, but, it happens with other programs. I seems to have gotten worse with the latest Quicktime update. I guess I'll need to figure out how to downgrade (but then iTunes also).

Nope it seems as if Motu does'nt care about solving this problem and I'm starting to get really angry due to this.

I don't know if a namelist could make Motu at least try to make a fix but we should start one here and email the link to Motu and see if they care about their customers at all?

Same here:
Traveler OSX 10.4.9 (The MAX/MSP-list, I was told, had info on the automatic update to 10.4.9, that it wouldn't work with MAX/MSP. A thread issue I think. The manual update, from apple's hompage did the trick for my glitching DP. Don't know if this problem has any relevans, since I still have this digital noice coming from my Traveler).

Powerbook G4 12" 1,5 GHz.

I've had the same problem. I've been able to get it all to work fine at times by uninstalling the drivers, deleting ALL motu hardware prefs, and then reinstalling the drivers again. Unfortunately, its been quite intermittent, and the problem still crops up every few times I try to use the Traveler, and I have to go through the re installation process again. I would also really appreciate it if MOTU could fix this.

I'm having the same problem with a 1st Generation MacBook Pro. On another box, using Windows, with a dirt cheap firewire card, things are flawless. I'm getting the same behaviour from Ardour on the MBP - so its not DP, it must be drivers. Strangely if I disable one of the CPU cores, the problem dissapears...? Sounds like the drivers don't like dual core CPUs
