hi, i just got a macbook with seagate 7200 rpm SATA 100 gig internal, and Lacie 250 gig FW800 external. what should be on each? is there an established partition size for DP51.1 that i should use? and with sample libraries and the recording audio... should they be on the internal or external and what is good rules of thumb about partitioning?

any advice or directions to links would be appreciated. i searched on this forum and didnt find any info...

I assume you are using Firewire audio I/O... watch out for Firewire buss logjams. If you have any trouble, consider recording to the internal drive and using the external drive for backup.

yes, i have a fireface 800. but i dont know if i need to partition the internal drive. after posting here i read that nowadays one doesnt need to do this unless thers another operating system on the drive.

is it stable doing it all on the internal?

I can't speak from experience as to stability on the internal drive, but would be willing to bet many, if not the majority of DP users on laptops record audio to their internal system drive.

Although you may not need to partition, you may wish to set up an audio partition so you can wipe it (erase) between projects without affecting your system partition. Erasing a partition completely guarantees your next project won't start its life as a fragmented hodge-podge of audio files.

Although I use separate audio drives on my G5, I keep several system partitions on my main drive, to allow risk-free system and application upgrading. I keep the current system intact as I experiment with upgrades, then use the upgraded partition once everything is working well. Clone the upgraded system partition to the old system's partition with Carbon Copy Cloner, and you are ready for the next upgrade cycle.

Since my system partitions are small compared to the overall size of the disc, there is also room for a back up partition on my system drive.
