This will probably seem like a silly question to lots of you, but i have jsut bought an 8pre to expand my 828mkII. I need to get the ADAT cable to connect them, and just making sure its gonna be the right thing....
Is an optical cable the same as every other one? (except quality). Like, if i got one from an electrical retailer that they keep for home cinema systems, will it be the same?
Thanks for you help

Not definitely shure about that, but my experience is positive with all of the optic wires I found anywhere and used in my system. Both on Adat and Toslink connection.

Why wouldn't you just connect the 8pre via firewire and skip the ADAT thing? Then you have the extra MIDI I/O and outputs (main, headphones). I don't believe there are any clocking issues using them as firewire standalone units. If you want it to appear as one unit to your software, use aggregate device in AMS.
I have a mac running OS X 10.3, and apparently you can't do that till version 10.4... Which sucks. I tried it but it just shows them both but you can't select them both at the same time. I can't see any aggregate device bit in audio MIDI setup... thats how i'd like to do it though... Does anyone know if it would work if I got 10.4? Thanks!
Here's a great article on additional features in Tiger (Aggregate Devices, etc.):

I use aggregate device, but not with that particular combination. Make the call to MOTU for the definitive answer.
Another thing is that we're only a few months away from Leopard - you may want to hang on a while. Use the ADAT connection in the interim, but you will should use two optical cables and connect both the ADAT input and output. Use the 828 MKII as the clock master - that way if you switch sample rates in the software both units will switch accordingly. If you only use one cable (output from 8pre to 828) you'll have to set the 8pre as master and manually change sample rate on the 8pre.
