Give us more context to work within. There's a broad gamut of I/O selections.
What are your needs? Are you setting up a hobby project studio or something more professionally-oriented? Are you recording live instruments or not (if so, how many tracks at once)? Are you situating your studio in a single place or need it be portable? What's your purchase budget?

I'm setting up a stationary system where i can record keyboard, live mike on a regualr basis. Mix down for projects recorded off site on another dp system. Will also record other gear as needed to complete offsite projects.
I will not have more than 4 recording at the same time. I'm always worried about budget, but dont want to sacrifce quality, compatiblity, flexability.
I'm using this to keep me from traveling to the other location to record, edit, create.
Other location has MOTU 2808 & Alesis ADAT on a G4 with DP 3.11. My new setup has G4 with DP 5, Yahama Motif.

Traveler is pretty ok for 4 channels on a budget. If you are using DP it should be one of the more certain to be compatible, though others less and more expensive might work. Most people probably wouldn't notice a great difference between a recording made on a Traveler and the same recording made with more expensive gear, though there are many who are very passionate about preamps and convertors.
You might consider the possiblity of either your collaborater upgrading to the same version of DP (BIG Change though because of OS 10) or you could setup a dual boot system to boot in 9.2 and run 3.1 when working on collaborations. You might find 3.1 somewhere- but whether a newer serial number will open it?
Otherwise you have to remember to "save as" DP3.1 everytime you want to send something back to him. Usually seems to work OK, but might lose some plugins or virtual instruments when it gets saved as an earlier version.
