clean desktop?

Post by beaudette »

A few months ago I had trouble with my G4 when I switched from OS9 to OSX as my startup disk, and I had to have it serviced. The 'computer guy' said I should clean up my desktop regularily because info gets moved around? Is this like doing a defrag or something? How do I do this?
(I've looked for this function in the control panel and can't find it)

I don't know of any need to do the old OS 9 style "rebuild desktop", but I do recall reading in one of the Mac mags recently (MacWorld?) that every icon on your desktop is treated somewhat like another window and requires more of your CPU than you might think. So keep an uncluttered desktop, and if you're running a DAW, use a solid-color desktop background with no fancy shading, and even consider stepping down a notch to using "thousands" instead of "millions" of colors for your display to ease the graphics load and improve redraws during tracking and playback. Now if you've got a big powerful machine this probably matters less or even not at all, but it seems to help my dual G4.
