DP load time - around a minute? Is this normal?

Hey guys, I've used DP for a while but always wondered...should it take so long to load? The files load slowly as well. I am in the graphics industry so Photoshop and other related programs can take about 5-7 at the most seconds but DP is always painfully slow. It makes it tough when it crashes or locks up because I need to restart the program - a lot of time is wasted just trying to get back to where I was during those moments.
Anyway, is this time normal to open DP or is something going on here?
I'm on a dual 1 GB G4 (Mirrored Door) with 1.75 GB of RAM.
Thanks,
Brian

It shouldn't take that long. Have you moved the plug-ins folder? Maybe it's looking for that but can't find it in the expected place, or perhaps trying to validate a weird plug-in. I remember when Photoshop took a long time to boot! If the plug-ins haven't been moved, try reinstalling DP? But first delete the DP preferences. If you have a question about how to do that, write back. Also I'd suggest you repair permissions on all your volumes, if you haven't already.

If your loading up VI's on a project it will take some time too...

On my PB G4/1.5, DP 5.1 takes about 20 seconds from clicking the alias to opening a project with no VIs and no plugins-- MIDI with 2 stereo tracks running Built-In Audio. That's a bit faster than my G5 tower. All the VI and plugin bundles take more time to register, and I imagine that the audio and MIDI interfaces need to shake hands with DP. Still, that doesn't take more than 40 seconds.
Projects fully loaded with VI's and samples on my system can take an additional 3-7 minutes, depending on the amount of samples.

It definitely takes DP a while to open on my system. I'd have to time it to be exact, but it's a couple of minutes. I notice that the Waves plugs seem to add a bit of time. Aside from a little Mach V glitch, though, 5.1 really seems to be working well. CPU usage is way down. I guess I'm just used to the long start up time.

Yeah, if you have a lot of VIs enabled in your project DP can take a while to load. This is especially true with NI ROMplers.
I'm fine with that. I can start up a project, then grab a soda, then get to work.
What drive me crazy is that DP goes through this loading rigamarole every time you even open the buffer settings window. PITA, baby.

Yeah-- even if you click cancel and don't change anything!!

Wow, in reading the posts after mine here on this thread, I now see how much VI's can affect loading time - shoulda known that...

But I guess that means there actually is an up side to being so legacy/old school (or just old!) that one uses ancient MIDI Modules rather than VI's (except I love the Juno one!)

Too funny Tommy...
The ancient modules will someday be worth many bucks because they are discrete entities.
They have their own unique I/O circuitry and much like a vintage mic or preamp, they cannot be truly duplicated in software.
They also have the advantage of zero CPU hit etc.
Yeah, there are may great VIs. I love 'em.
They do take a bit of loading time if you use the heavy hitters.
