How to reliably chain two 828 Mk2s

many thanks to Brad Lyons from Sweetwater for the basic heads-up:
if you are having trouble daisychaining two 828Mk2s with Firewire cable, and you don't want to/haven't had luck changing Windows XP drivers and such, try this instead:
* in the "slave" unit, connect your instrument inputs as usual
* get an optical/lightpipe cable (available from Radio Shack, CompUSA, etc.)
* attach the cable from teh optical out of the slave unit to the optical in of the master unit
* set the slave unit's Optical Out to ADAT and the master unit's Optical In to ADAT at either 48 kHz (8 channel) or 96 kHZ (4 channel)
* set the master unit's clock source to ADAT Opt (either 44/48 or 88/96 depending on the sample rate you selected above)
* to get the full benefit of multichannel ADAT you'll need to set up different mix busses in the slave unit. Use Bus1 for ADAT outputs 1-2, Bus2 for ADAT 3-4, etc.
* Then using CueMix assign each slave input channel to one of the Mix buses (inputs 1-2 to ADAT 1-2, etc.); basically bring the input channel faders up on the bus you want it to go to, and mute the input channel faders on the other buses.
* remember to bring up the ADAT input faders in your master unit
* the master units gets Firewired to your PC as usual. Thus there is only one Firewire connection in your setup.
You could also use S/PDIF with either a coax or optical cable, but you'd be limited to two input channels into the master unit, so you'd lose mixing and recording flexibility. But if you already have a spare coax S/PDIF cable, that's another option.
