Hello, I finish installing motu 828mkII and it leaves the following message to me:

Sounds like you've got the USB version and are plugging it into a USB 1.0 port.

The USB version requires USB 2.0

I learned (the hard way) that when you upgrade XP to Service Pack 2, the drivers for your 1394 firewire interface card are replaced with Service Pack 2 versions (which don't work properly in this situation).

The solution is to keep Service Pack 2, but to replace the appropriate files with those from Service Pack 1.

The following is a cut and paste of the solution I found here. I would love to give proper credit to the author, but I'm afraid that info may not be included here.

The instructions are a bit involved, but if you follow them carefully, the problem will be solved. If it is beyond your knowledge, perhaps you have a guru that can help you out.

(I seem to recall that someone made a download available of the nececssary SP1 files, but it didn't include these instructions so it really wasn't much use.)

Good Luck. I can assure you, if you can make sense of this and can follow it to the letter, it works. Worked like a charm for me.

Back to SP1?

So is it necessary to uninstall SP2 to get back the previously achieved performance? No. It is sufficient to install the operating system's old FireWire driver. In fact it is already enough to exchange two files [1]. Here's how to do it:

Go to the the hidden Windows\Inf directory and copy 1394.inf to a new directory, like \1394_fix.

Before updating to SP2:

Go to Windows\system32\drivers and copy ohci1394.sys and 1394bus.sys to \1394_fix. These files have a date around august 2002, and say SP1 in their file properties.
If you already updated to SP2: the old ohci1394.sys and 1394bus.sys are found in Windows\Driver Cache\i386\sp1.cab. Copy the files from this archive into the directory \1394_fix.

If you had not installed SP1: the files are found in driver.cab, but this archive includes older files that we did not test.

Install the SP2 update

Go to Windows\system32\drivers and copy these files to \1394_fix: arp1394.sys, enum1394.sys, nic1394.sys
These files are the ones from SP2. There is no need to reinstall all old FireWire drivers. Some of them haven't changed, others are for network use only.

These files are now also found in the sp2.cab, location see above.

Rename sp2.cab to sp2_dead.cab.
This is necessary, as Windows includes a nice security mechanism, which prevents worst-case-users from accidentally overwriting important driver files with older versions, or even worse, deleting them completely. So if you try to install the mix of driver files in \1394_fix, Windows will automatically install the newer files found in its sp2.cab!

Make sure the Fireface is switched off and no other external FireWire device is present.

Go to Device Manager, FireWire controller (OHCI xxx, 1394 or similar), Properties, Driver, Driver Update. Select 'No, only this time', 'Install from a list or specific location (advanced)', click 'Next', select 'Don't search I will choose the driver to install', click 'Next', then 'Have Disk'. Now point to \1394_fix. Then continue.

Windows will now ask for the path to the file ohci1394.sys and 1394bus.sys. It wants to install the newer ones (see above). Again point to \1394_fix.
That's it. You can now go to Driver Details, and verify that all driver files are from SP2 except the ohci1394.sys and 1394bus.sys, which are from SP1. Next reboot, switch on the Fireface, and check that the Fireface can perform record/playback.

Finally you can rename sp2_dead.cab back to sp2.cab. Windows will no longer try to copy the newer driver file until you do a reinstall of the FireWire controller driver. So it makes sense to activate the driver cache security mechanism again.

I have proven to install to driver (3.5.3.2), but the problem persists.

Your error message does not look like mine. Maybe the problem you have is different from the one I had.

IF you are running XP with Service Pack 2, you should follow the instructions from my previous post. You should also run the latest updates and use the newest drivers from MOTU.

If this fix does not make sense to you, you must find someone who can help you.

I had the exact same problem last night on my macbook pro with bootcamped WinXP and my 828mk2 firewire.

I had the troublsome SP2 firewire problem which produced the "The device is on a bus that cannot support this transfer rate" problem. When I installed the microsoft quick fix mentioned in the post above, I got rid of this problem but now I have another problem:

Live and the Motu Console now see my 828mk2 but when I try to play audio through the asio driver, I get intermittent cut-outs that produce a high pitched sound. This happens about every second or so. If I change the buffer size, the frequency of these cuts changes. On the front pannel of the unit. There are spikes in the SPDIF vu meters, which I am not using...

The unit works perfectly on my other windowsXP machines. It also works perfectly on the same macbook pro running OSX.

I've tried reinitializing the unit to the factory defaults, which solved a similar problem I had a long time ago, with high-pitched squeels followed by garbled audio... But this is a noticibly different problem. The reinitializing does not help. In this case the audio is clean, except for the highpitched cuts...

I've reinstalled the drivers a hundred times. I've used the universal USB/Firewire ones, as well as the older firewire ones. Is there anything special you have to do when unistalling drivers in order to reinstall them? I tried looking for anything motu on my drive and deleting it, but I am still stumped...

Please help!

I first had this problem when i went to Service Pack 2 recently. It was weird but i just had to reinstall the drivers a couple of times and now it works perfectly. I didnt need to install the hotfixes. I can only imagine that this refers to the firewire transfer rates. I had heard that the only difference with SP2 firewire drivers was that it accomodated firewire800 and perhaps this has something to do with the message about wrong transfer rates. But then again s800 should still support s400 devices?
