Hi All -

Good news to report. Got my Dual 2.3 G5 today, and after setting it up today it seems to be running DP 4.52 along with my Powercore smoothly. I haven't done a lot of work yet, but it definitely records and plays. ;) The Powercore plugs run just fine and I was even able to sync Live without a hitch!!! Mach5 tomorrow....

I'll keep you posted!

Dr Pepper

P.S. This is in Tiger Mind You!

Good luck. What made you decide on the G5 2.3 or the 2 gig? I'm in the market myself now for a MAC. I'm a little concerned about all the noise issues I'm hearing about. Is the 2.3 quiet? Do you know if they made any improvements over the earlier versions in terms of fan noise?

I look forward to hearing how your setup is going. What other gear did you purchase or are you using?

I'm not answering your question, but I've decided to go with the 2.3. I want to stay away from the liquid cooling on the 2.7, and the 2.3 will be more than enough power considering I'm coming from a dual 800. Hopefully I'll be able to buy this week (waiting for $)

What's wrong with liquid cooling? As Gary said, nothing. But anyone who has had a refrigerator or air conditioner go out will be hesitant to trust the cooling sytem after Applecare expires. Suffice to say they haven't proven themselves yet. In five years, if there are no ugly incidents of pumps going dead and processors self-incinerating, we'll be able to stand behind Gary and say "he's right, you know."

Meanwhile, be certain that there is nothing wrong with liquid cooling by purchasing Applecare.

Thanks for the opinions. Most of my air conditioners have tried to outlive me. Applecare sounds sensible, but I usually buy big ticket items on a credit card that doubles the warranty and seldom keep them more than a couple of years.

Are the liquid cooled models quieter?

Thanks Soosh...

Yea, if it did blow, like in the next 15 years or so, I would just consider it a subtle reminder that it was time to upgrade my computer, cheapskate that I am.

By the way... great post on live sound & DP dude!

Well, I had my first session yesterday with not a single crash. I had lots of Powercore Plugs running as well as Mach5. I can safely say that El Tigre is running strong with MOTU. (for me)

I'm loving the speed of the G5 - so snappy. As for liquid cooling, I've heard rumors of it being a little noisy (the pump is what I heard is the problem.) I was considering going with a 2.5, but I figured it was about the same price for a 2.3, and it comes with Tiger and is air cooled. I can't wait for the dual core chips - I'll prob be upgrading in a year anyhow!!!

I've got a liquid cooled machine and it is the quitest machine I've ever had. It is VERY QUIET. as far as pump noise, I was under the impression the coolant was convectively circulated, thus there could be no pump noise. In any event, I hear no pump noise.

Hi Dr. Pepper,
Wondering how your new 5G5 2.3 gig is working out. Have you had any issues since purchasing. Tiger compatibility with DP, MIDI file recognition, system crashers, fan noise, etc.
I'm just about to pick up a 2.3 gig myself and I look forward to hearing about your experience.

Working out great! Can't complain. Really everything is going smoothly. I'd highly encourage you to start from scratch, I think that's what got me start on the right foot.

All my apps seem to be running just fine - especially DP, loaded up with plugs, etc!

Cheers.

Interesting. How does it compare to a Alumninum Powerbook? I have a PB and it's pretty quiet.

Great to hear your system is doing so well. From the posts I've read it seems like there are alot of people who are having difficulty. Question, When you say "start from scratch"..How did you approach it? Did you choose tackeling specific items to master first over others? Hope you don't mind my questions. I just don't want to go down the wrong path while I'm trying to build a solid base of knowledge.
Thanks jt

Interesting. I actualy haven't read about a lot of people having difficulty. I think the new Macs and Tiger are the smoothest running systems out the gate yet.

I was having some problems ONLY because of the UAD-1 not beiong Tiger compatible. That's the only problem I've had. Everything works great for me.

I got the Dual 2.7 the first day it was available April 27th. It took me a minute to figure out how to get Panther installed on it, but now everything is hunky dory.
