Mach5 and Surround Question

Okay. This is from the MOTU site:

The advantage to HTDM is that it allows MachFive to be used in surround mode (if you have a surround-equipped monitoring system).

I've got Mach5 arriving in a few days, and I'm wondering if this quote from MOTU means that surround mode cannot be used under MAS? It sounds like a silly question (even to me).

Does this mean that I need to install the HTDM version and run it under DAE in order to use it in surround mode?

Please excuse my ignorance...

This is certainly not your definitive answer, but while I can add a surround track in DP (5.01) in MAS, the option to add a MachFive Quad or 5.1 track is greyed out. That would lead me to believe you are correct: you probably CANNOT have a surround M5 track with MAS.

I have surround capabilities in my system and can actually go to 9.1 which is, of course, academic at this point for most practical purposes except maybe live theater/concert playback.

(You don't have MachFive yet? I would have expected you to be one of the first on line. It rocks. Channeling M5 and GPO samples to Finale is way cool, if not the most elegant aspect of my system these days.)

Far be it for me to contradict the venerable MLC, but I use M5 in surround, and not thru DAE. Well, actually, truth be told, I used it until I moved house and lost my iLok USB dongle thingy...

...but, until said misplacement, I could easily create a M5 instance and route it to 5.1.

Wow!! That's encouraging for me, but I don't know how MLC will feel about it...!!

MLC-- grayed out? Hmmm.... Is that regardless of having any surround bundles in place?

Yes-- back when M5 first came out, I was advised against it (by my merchant of all people!!), and was told to wait until version 2. That was two years ago, and the rest is history-- or prophecy, depending on how you look at it!

I found a good deal this week and decided to just go for it, still uncertain if/when K2 will be necessary.

Now, it seems that our brothah from down undah has got the right thundah!! I'll be hitting you both up for advice in a few days when I get it installed and running.

Actually, I'm kind of jazzed about having this..!

Venerable? I've been called many things, but that's a new one! Ha! Thanks for the laugh!

OK, I played with it a bit more and once I added a 5.1 bundle, I WAS able to add a 5.1 M5 instrument, so I had a venerable brain fart... But yes, you CAN do it under MAS without a MESS. I hadn't added a new bundle to the 5.01 install so the option to add that instrument was not available. Duh!!!

So, my little fur-footed friend, it seems that the Golum has gone out of your M5 aspirations and the Shire shall be ringing with the sounds of sampled laughter once again. Everybody will be happy and smiling and HOLDING THEIR EARS once you load that 5.1 catherdral organ!!!

...venerable indeed, my dear MLC. Many time a post of yours has corrected some shtewpid mistake of mine, so I tug the proverbial forelock in esteem and appreciation of your wisdom!

In terms of M5, I must say I am underwhelmed with its surrounding abilities. Sure, you can route it to a set of surround outputs, but that is really about all you can do. I haven't missed it all that much lately because I have been having more surround madness/fun with CronoX3 and Absynth 3.

Maybe when (if?) Mv2 comes out they will offer some modulation in the surround matrices, but as it stands now, it really seems like it does little more than you would get if you took a stereo instance and mapped it to a surround track/panner. On the other hand, CronoX3 and Absynth 3 allow you to do some really freaky things in surround.

I'd settle for a date...

As for surround under MAS, one thing I wish that could be done: that bundles for such things don't have to be put in manually before options are available to instantiate a desired format. If you want to load up a surround sample, DP ought to just do that for you-- the way it sets up a freeze track without a lot of manual labor.

I am interested in surround sampling, creating FX, etc-- but I'm also interested in some of the new surround libraries on the market-- in hopes that they'll translate properly.

I do wonder if these formats can be loaded in directly or if they'll have to be demux'd from some encoded surround format... Hmmm.
