Hi

There are so many posts with various bugs, issues, etc., but I can't seem to get a handle on how people feel overall about DP5.

Should those of us who haven't upgraded yet do so? Or, do you that have upgraded think that we should wait for the next update?

Are the bugs to many and disruptive?

Well, DP 5 is working great for me.

Given that most people don't post to this site unless they have a problem or gripe, I don't know if I'm in the minority or majority of DP 5 users having a good experience.

I will say it may be useful to delete and create new permissions and audio bundle settings when jumping to DP 5. The only problem I've run into related to a bussing issue. Since I've reset my audio bundles, all's been well. I don't know if this constitutes a bug exactly (i.e., some MOTU programming f up) or if my past bundle settings weren't built to work efficiently with the new monitoring functions.

Anyway, if you were to ask me, I'd say if your box can handle 4.61, jump to 5. Just one man's opinion though.

I'm following at least two issues before upgrading-- the bus issue and the BTD issue. But the complaints haven't been *that* major as far as I can tell.

One thing that keeps me in 4.6x for the moment is that it's working well. I'm gettiing DP5 sooner or later, but stability is hard to argue with.

One thing that might spur me to get DP5 sooner rather than later would be to see more reports of the quirks with DP 4.6x having been ironed out.

But for me, it's more a question of "when" I'll upgrade rather than "if".

DP5 is working like a charm here. I'd upgrade and keep a copy of 4.61 in case you're not 100% confident about 5.0...

Thanks for the replies - that's exactly the kind of thing I was looking for. Its very true that people mainly come here to gripe, which is a shame, but at least there is a venue for them to do so (and get some help).

I will definitely be making the jump sooner or later. Right now, my G4 1.3 processor struggles to stay alive, so when I finally move up to something a little more powerful, I'll pick up DP5.

Anyone else out there have positive experiences? I'd love to hear what's going really well for people, what they now could never live without, etc.

MOTU makes it really easy to keep multiple versions of DP installed. I have versions going back to 4.5 on my current system.

I've had no problems with DP5, but I was very careful before I installed. Before you install, I suggest that you do the following, in the following order (as I did):

• Back up all of your projects to an offline drive(s) or DVDs
• Run Apple Software Update
• Update all of your drivers, plugins, and virtual instruments
• Install AppleJack and run it on autopilot once.
• Install DP5
• Any time you open a Project with DP5, save it in the existing project folder as "(Project Name) DP5" so that you can always open your older project file with DP 4.61 if things go badly for any reason.

I've had no crashes and everything is working great so far! That includes recording to 8 tracks simultaneously, autopunching, playback of 50+ track projects with many VIs and plugins, automation, etc. DP5 seems faster and more stable I would say!

when one cannot trust a mix to play back properly, that is major, I'd wait

I just finished a mix for a movie yesterday.... I started the project with DP 4.61 but 2/3 of the editing and the mix were done in DP 5. Something I cannot live without ? Track folders and the new edit tools <--

You can say that again. I have been wanting track folders for the past 8 years!!! FINALLY!!!!!

I got a bunch of stuck notes playing into the Mach Five. When I switched back to 461, I was fine. So I'm not using DP5, and wont until a deadline passes. Then I may try to see if there are MIDI loops involved, as per shooshie and others.

Look, I'm not going to try to disupte the bugs anyone's had, as everyone's setup is different - however, there are a lot of important details missing from these posts (configuration, what precautions, or lack thereof, were taken prior to installing DP5, etc.), and if you take the same precautions I did, you can get into DP5 risk-free.

MOTU's obviously put a lot of hard work into this release, but with any major software update you have to take certain precautions. I know that a lot of you probably already have, and I'm not trying to insult anyone's intelligence, but there does seem to be a Chicken Little syndrome around here lately...

Kazrog - I agree. that's why I started this thread. The whole page is filled with problems about DP5, but there are too many factors to determine what the issue is. That's why I was searching for the positive stories...

Look, I'm not going to try to disupte the bugs anyone's had, as everyone's setup is different - however, there are a lot of important details missing from these posts (configuration, what precautions, or lack thereof, were taken prior to installing DP5, etc.), and if you follow the steps I have taken, you can get into DP5 risk-free.

The main precaution to take is to keep 4.61 (or earlier depending on your use) on your box. If DP5 runs sweetly, then sweet. If sourly, then revert.

And again, I'll emphasize: I don't think you can get an accurate gauge of DP 5 usability via this or any other bulletin board. That said, I do think it's worth it to fish for disparate experiences in the hope of maybe gaining some balance.
