Sound Soap 2

Bought Sound Soap 2 after reading a few positive threads. A while ago I had done a session with a girl in an open air house. It was raining like mad, no chance to do the take at a later time. Major rain noise on the roof and with every window open the rain sound came from everywhere.

Now, months later, darn if that SS2 didn't wash that rain almost right out of the track. Amazing! Only 79 bucks!

SS2 is an amazing ap. Plug-in or stand-alone it does wonders. It saved a live concert recording I made by scrubbing problem hiss from 2 key vocal mic tracks. Definitely worth the money.

I've been using it as an alternative to the expensive Restoration Bundle by Waves. While it is very helpful, it's not as good as Waves' version. At least, my memory of Waves' version was substantially better than this... maybe if I tried it again I wouldn't think so. I was pretty blown away that it could work at all!

For me, I find that with Soundsoap 2 it's always a balance of tuning the sound and adjusting the intensity of the effect, but no matter how I do it, it's always going to produce artifacts. So, it's really a three-way balance, and you just have to decide how much of the artifact you can stand, or when it becomes worse than the original noise. A little EQ helps restore some of the lost frequencies in voice.

So, yeah, I basically agree; Soundsoap 2 is a pretty darned good little app, and for the money it's unbeatable! I just wish Waves' Restoration Bundle cost so little!

BIAS also makes SoundSoap Pro that has a lot more powerful features. It has multiband controls for broadband noise so that you can have different threshold and reduction settings for different frequency bands. It makes it a lot better for delicate restoration work and definitely reduces the amount of artifacts, and it's still about half the price of the Waves Restoration bundle.
