Ho ho ho!!!!! Haaaaaaa!!!! Muuuuuhhaaaaaaaa!!!

I've been hollering at Motu for 5 years about this (since I left DP and moved to Logic rather permanently, and have since gone to PT|HD). To limit their users to SD2 (or double their drive usage with duplicate files of every BWAV that their friends on PCs or PT, or Logic, or Nuendo give them), which at this point is a DEAD FILE FORMAT is trés uncool.

BWAV is the professional standard adopted by the EBU (they also finalized the spec for the format - it will be supported for many years to come); even Digi, the company that created the SD2 format, has adopted BWAV as their preferred and recommended format.

I think if Motu decided to add native support for additional file formats, it would be in one of the sidebar headers on the new DP5 info page. It was one of the first things I looked for, too...

There's no question that Broadcast WAVE is growing quickly in its support, usage, and adoption -- ESPECIALLY in the pro audio business (in which I work). A major product recently announced support for it and I thought I remembered it being DP, but I guess it was something else then.

At any rate, just because it isn't in DP 5 is no reason to despair. After all, look at what they gave us in version 4.6 for free! I bet many of us have already forgotten the three-step process we had to do to bounce to disk in a usable non-SD II format! Now we can bypass that format altogether!

So maybe BWF will be in version 5.1...

Yeah, DP needs to jump on the BWF train. It's quickly being adopted as the pro audio file format.

It's simply ridiculous that DP is still using SDII. It's simply a pain in the ass format and has been for the last few years. And, add to that, DP still doesn't support interleaved stereo files. Everytime you import a stereo file it has to convert to .L and .R doubling the number of files you have to have in your folder. Plus, you can't have mixed file formats in your project.....everything has to be one format 16 or 24 bit, has to be SDII files. Even if you import some 16 bit files into your 24 bit session, it will add friggin zeros to your file to create 24 bit files. What a waste of time and disk space.

While I am completely in favor of DP supporting BWF format, the highlighted items in the above post are the same in Pro Tools as well. Valid points, but not unique restrictions in DP. Does Logic allow these?

Yes, on both counts.

But PT handles it's files way better than DP any way... if dbl clkin a just recorded region in PT it names the file on disk too.

You can drag a 2 adjacent mono files onto a stereo track in PT and vice versa.

But yeah SDII is over!
