Quite possibly it's the drive.

One of my Stylus RMX Discs wouldnt read, I tried it in my wife's computers Drive and it read just fine. Needless to say I "stole" her drive. LOL

And for you other peeps, it's cool because I am bying another G5 next month and she gets my old one. LOL

Finder -> Preferences -> Show these items on the Desktop:
make sure that CDs, DVDs is checked.

You can also check if Disk Utility sees the inserted DVD. If it does not (even after a reboot) the DVD might be damaged.

GS-- sometimes defective DVDs slip past quality control. Unfortunate and rare, but it does happen. It sounds as if your drive is fine if it's reading other discs without a problem.

If this a commercial DVD that came from MOTU, getting it replaced should be no problem. Any merchant worth his salt will exchange it for you on the spot.

Just for the sake of troubleshooting, have you tried to open the DVD on another machine? Maybe a fellow Mac-user-friend wouldn't mind you doing this.

No big deal frodo. You know how us music types are.. we sometimes read or hear something and need to read or hear it from 2 guys twice (redundancy) to actually get it. LOL

Peace and hair grease...
