i know that there have been quite a few threads on the issue of which monitors to get...
that said.
i recently moved into an apartment that is pretty much the noisiest place (RF-wise) ever!
after troubleshooting the *#@! out of the problem, i've narrowed it down to my power amp. it's a Cambridge Audio amp that i've owned for years with no problems whatsoever plus i just bought a pair a Tannoy Reveal 6's (passsive) 6 months ago and have loved them since.
a good friend of mine let me borrow his Event 20/20's and low and behold, the RF noise is gone!
....can anyone see where this is going??......

now i need to sell my Tannoys and Cambridge and go active.....
the Tannoy Reveal 6D's are my first choice.
actually, they're the ones i really want, but i just wanted to get anyone's opinion who may have used them extensively.

I've been using the Tannoy Reveal 6Ds for a few months now. They sound great. Clear and distinct. And, from what I've read, they're a real step up from the older Tannoy Reveals.

Just know that they're sensitive to a lot of sub-low energy (though they can handle a good amount). You'll want to keep frequencies under 40-to-50 Hz tamed. If you do a lot of hip hop, dance or techno that uses 808-style kicks or really deep sine-wave bass-lines, then you'll want to high-pass filter those tracks at around 35-40 Hz and/or pick up the Tannoy D subwoofers. Ohterwise, the 6Ds might shut down temporarily to prevent woofer damage.

I do a good share of that kind of stuff -- mostly techno-oriented -- and I just high-pass at 40 Hz with a gradual ramp so as to not cut all the sub-lows out completely (you want to be able to "feel" it a little).

Anyway, my two cents.

what are the advantages to the s/pdif inputs?
can i somehow use them to monitor, or would i be trapped into the level of my mix, ie. no monitor gain?

i found this place in london that has them for the right price...
don't call me stupid.
but, will there be an issue with a.c.?

it seems like the voltage is region specific, according to the specs

I imagine that volume via spdif has to be controlled from your software, which may be a little restricting.

I use active surround monitors, and I use an SPL analog monitor controller for them. I don't know if there is a simple digital alternative.

yeah, i contacted tannoy and they said that a converter would be required...
i wonder if there are any converters out there with pro audio equipment in mind....

It does. And it is. I ended up switching from SPDIF to analog out to the speakers. You can control that volume via your audio interface. Since I work in a less-than-optimal acoustic environment, I couldn't really tell any difference in aural quality.

i need a solid list of pros and cons between the three models of reveals....
the 5A's, the 6D's and the 8D's...
i found this shop in Florida that has B-stock 8D's for $960 a pair!!!

These are the best sounding monitors I've ever heard on my rig so far...I'm talkin' flat flat flat!
I'm thinkin' about going straight s/pdif out to them from my finalizer so as to monitor what's actually going to tape(or should I say CD)...
I know it was mentioned before about volume control, but the speakers have volume knobs...on the back!
I've never been able to properly monitor the finalized mix before due to the limited standby mode on my "prosumer" CDR.
My 01V has 20bit A/D converters and the Tannoy's have 24bit....will I notice a difference??? We'll see.

Glad you're digging them! I like my 6Ds quite a bit. Really clean, right?

Yeah, I tried to use the monitor volume knobs, but they get so loud so fast. I'm cool with using my interface's volume though.

I've got the 6Ds as well. Pretty nice. Although I'll throw my name in the hat about the SPDIF level control. I wish there was a way to map the volume control of the 828mkII Main Out to the SPDIF out instead. I've noticed a much cleaner signal with virtually no noise from the SPDIF out into the 6Ds, the pisser is that it's just too darn loud! And I don't want to pay $500 for a Central Station just so I can control my main volume.

Tannoy 6D vs ADAM A7, anyone?

The price on the ADAMs is right too...
