Running MachFive under DP (4.61) couldn't be easier in terms of dragging and dropping samples. Key placement is a breeze which is really fantastic for sound FX work and drum kits. I can't think of a hardware sampler I've used that is better sounding or easier to use. (No they don't pay me to say that.) It also plays well in VRacks in DP so larger projects don't get the CPU bloat!

My earlier comment about the color was, of course, flippant. But it does seem that visual interface is becomming rather important as a sale element in MOTU's PR. Ethno (TBA) is supposed to sport a world map wherein you can "select a region." Let's hope the samples are as well produced.

As far a MachFive, I suspect the interface will remain largely unchanged for a while. I personally would LOVE to see a seperate sample edit window that can be zoomed to large size. That would certainly help in editing start, end and loop points.

That's encouraging regarding ease of drag and drop. I haven't put in enough time to really check it out indepth, mostly just checked out the included soundbanks. I will be devoting some time to really get to know it soon. It seems like all the tools are there for editing, layering/stacking, and batch import.

Understood about "mostly blue" being a bit of fun, but you are correct, visual impact is and should be a factor, it affects how you interact with the program, even on a subconscious level or emotional level.

I do think it's important as a user element. By that I mean UI functionality and intuitiveness, not taste. M5 does okay by those standards.

And you can use it to transport matter if you pick up the dilithium crystal AU plug-in (MAS is discontinued).

Agreed. Definitely.

No, but I've only imported AKAI and older Gigasampler files. I haven't tried other formats yet; I haven't had the need. And the samples that ship with M5 operate fine, of course.

Just for clarity: I do like M5. It does what I expect it to do. No fuss, no muss.

I will say as time goes on I move away from general sample libraries and more toward dedicated virtual instruments. It's more expensive generally, but the quality differences are worth it for me.
Thanks, great info. I am new to DAW, have been using Ensoniq samplers for quite awhile, so I would imagine that basic sampling is the same in HW and SW samplers. The virtual instruments, and being able to use just about everything out there is what got my attention on the M5. One of the virtuals Ive been interested in are the many accoustic piano's out there, shoot there are quite a few. I would love to be able to walk into a shop and try a number of them b4 I would buy 1.
Ive been able to try Giga's piano, but felt the meat of a piano was missing.
Theres 2 I want to try, Ivory, White Grand, okay, 3, Black grand, ok, 4, Akoustic, I think thats from NI. Miroslav is great, but other than that, Im searching. Ok, heres a question for you, would I be able to use samples from my HW sampler mixed w/soft synth samples in the M5? I do a lot of layering, and this would be a great tool for me.
