So, does this make DP one of the only DAWs that has a Clip Laucher (other than Live and Bitwig)? Not up on the latest versions of Logic and Cubase-- do they have Clips windows?

Pretty sure only Live and Bitwig. This could put DP ahead of the game somewhat in this area for now, esp if their version of it improves in some way on Live/Bitwig.

the Mach Five quip, yeah that's got me beyond curious,
The actual quote is: "... the entire UVI, and parts of the MachFive 3 library.."

Which is curious, since MachFive was made UVI, wasn't it? At any rate the "entire" something, but "parts of" something else. So I would imagine it's not EVERYTHING from MachFive. I would also imagine it will be some sort of ROMpler deal, otherwise they would be saying the word "sampler."

actually, @ 1:00 he said, "We have the MOTU Instrument Soundbank which we're including with DP10 as an upgrade, which is basically the entire UVI and parts of the Mach Five 3 library....". this comment really got my attention as "What's New" had featured "DP10 includes a 5 GB library of multi-sample acoustic instruments, synths, loops and phrases: that's over 300 different instruments, 1100 instrument presets and 500 loops."

So, if there's going to be an included 5GB library and, according to Brendan, it will include "the entire UVI and parts of the Mach Five 3 library", I set off to UVI's page to find out what wonderful things are included in "the entire UVI...".
I headed straight to the UVI Ircam Solo Instruments - - one of the many libraries offered by UVI - - an immediately was confronted with "Size: 5.53GB (FLAC)...
huh?...
If just this *one* UVI library runs over 5GB (compressed) and UVI offers dozens of libraries, how is MOTU going to offer "the entire UVI..."etc.? I think the answer is they can't...or they aren't. Perhaps Brendan misspoke?

In any event, it *will* be interesting to see what exactly DP10 *will* offer!!

Curious, yes. He included "UVI" in that quip. It also says the these sounds amount to 5G, so something doesn't add up.

The upgrade looks promising - scaling the size of the UI is very welcome.

1. One thing difficult to discern from the DP10 videos which seem to concentrate on audio loops clips - are FX plugins and VI Instruments drag and drop to a track?

I have enjoyed that in Studio One but still use DP for many things - drag and drop of an instrument or a plugin to setup on a track is a joy to use and would be great if this was what was offered from the Content Browser - and would see me using DP much more again.

2. I agree with James that DP should not try to be all things to all people - chasing the Live, Bitwig, FL crowd may be futile, but improving DP with things other DAWs do well is worth it - Cubase, Studio One, Logic, Pro Tools, Reason, and the Grim Reaper are the main competitors here (Sonar seemingly in abeyance for now despite its revival).

3. The Mach 5 library - if you don't have Mach 5 is this any use? Studio One has a really good Sample playing instrument included called Presence which meant I could dispense with using Reason as a sample instrument source (which I had to use with DP). Mach 5 seems an expensive outlay to me - especially if I have to pay the $195 upgrade price for DP. Just wondered what others think.

Gaz, isn't there still a free UVI player ("UVI Workstation") that can handle the stuff being offered with DP10?

Unlikely they'd bundle in 5G of sounds with no way to play them.

Thx for feedback, still think there is zero emulated software amps that can come remotely close to BIAS, how can they with Amp Match, and tons of user created amps available. To each his own...

Still favor the DP GUI and workflow, and chunks, I am use to... Dp 9.5, then free update to version 10.

Version 10 seems to at first glance compare well to Logic 10.4x

Thx, john

Thanks for this tip - I am trying to work out how to use it but it could be useful - thanks.

There's a better content browser that does that exact thing.

2. I agree with James that DP should not try to be all things to all people - chasing the Live, Bitwig, FL crowd may be futile, but improving DP with things other DAWs do well is worth it - Cubase, Studio One, Logic, Pro Tools, Reason, and the Grim R••••• are the main competitors here (Sonar seemingly in abeyance for now despite its revival).
Sure, but the fact is the big DAWs are used not because they're streamlined, that role goes to FL Studio, Live, Reason etc. they're used because they literally offer everything. You want extensive MIDI and audio editing, score editors, event lists, key commands, step sequencing, advanced quantize features, movie syncing types, etc. etc. you use DP, Logic, Cubase etc. You don't use the streamlined DAWs, but the one main feature that a few of those streamlined DAWs has that can't really be matched in the more feature packed DAWs is the Clips firing etc.

IMO even if the long time users are confused or nonplussed by this, it's a really smart move, and I'm certain we will see the others follow suite.
3. The Mach 5 library - if you don't have Mach 5 is this any use? I'm sure it's the actual sounds of the library that MOTU own or have a cheap license for from UVI, and some sort of embedded rompler to play them on. You're not going to need anything like Falcon or M53 to use them. Must be a boring looking interface that's all I can think, since they're not showing it.

He clearly misspoke. The UVI World Suite alone is 30GB. Maybe a NAMM goer can get clarification.

None of these new features were anything I would have expected, but I still really like like what they've done. The VCAs (they're actually DCAs) are most welcome! Those and the resizable GUI alone are worth the upgrade. The Clips thingy might be useful, if I can figure out how it works..

OK you guys don't laugh, but I only have one real disappointment about this release.. no mention of any new themes.

I'm bored with the old ones, and the version 9 2D grey on grey with grey highlights on a grey background is somewhat uninspiring, for some reason.

I just got an email response back from MOTU customer service regarding my question about a grace period and they happened to include that they are expecting a mid-February release date.

Can someone at namm ask a question for me, I want to know if the clips can be captured as an arrangement like you can in live, and also please ask about the rompler for the new instruments
