Cracked me up....

I have seen several posts from people who have had problems burning CDs.
For what it's worth, so have I. From DP6 with all the updates and now DP7.2 I have NEVER had any success burning.
I have followed the manual to the letter, followed Robin Bigwood's written advice in SOS, even spoken to Musictrack and got some helpful hints, but all to no avail.
My CD burns almost always 'fail with error' in DP. The resultant CDs do not play properly on any reader/player I have; the longer the CD, the more likely it has errors on the later tracks. I've tried different brands of CD and different write speeds; there is no difference.
The writer is ok with Data CDs via the Burn Folder on the Mac, and with CDs via Toast, and with writing DVDs via FCP/Compressor/DVD Studio Pro; so I don't think the writer has a fault. All I can do is agree with the people who say CD burning in DP is a waste of time. I cannot get anywhere with this problem so I just have to be content with having a rant and burning CDs by other means.

If you want to be able to make CD's in DP you need to leave about 3 secs of blank space at the end of the track(s) your bouncing so DP can write the lead out. I was having the same problem and it was driving me nuts. also, get the program "Wave editor" it is very reasonably priced and puts toast to shame...!! there is a slight learning curve to Wave Editor so make sure and read the PDF thoroughly..but once you have it down it is a really great program.

It could be karma coming to get me for some past life transgression. But I've been pretty good in this one... and most of my music is positive and based on love.

So I am more inclined to think my obstacles and challenges are more the result of the boogie man. I say it jokingly, but the frequency of such things has me partially believing it.

However, it could be the V-Rack, a screwy MOTU 2408, or some component conflict or any number of things that have resulted in certain functions not working for me the way they might for someone else.

Also, I work on projects that were started in earlier versions of DP. Almost everything I am working on at the moment was first created in DP5 and then worked on in DP6 and now in DP7. Some of my stuff started in DP4. I have to wonder if some screwy stuff is happening to my files because of how long they have been in progress.

Today I am opening up all my current projects to try and resolve some sort of a component issue I am having which is causing some projects to crash DP. It is frustrating to have to divert myself from creativity, but the hangs and crashes are getting out of control so I have to try getting to the bottom of it. This morning I did find that AmpegSVX is a definite culprit. Removing that plugin has resolved some problems. I'll try reinstalling it.

I use V-Racks exclusively (well, with an occasional synth loaded into the sequence itself), so I don't think it's that. Also, I regularly work in old files going back as far as 1987, and they all open fine, nor do they crash while working on them. Those that haven't been opened since long ago still have the windows arranged for the old tiny monitors that I used to have to work on, including the original Mac's screen!

Age of the file isn't the issue. Plugin compatibility is. If you have old plugins that are no longer compatible but are still in your system, THAT can sometimes cause crashes.

There is one other thing that I've seen that can cause all manner of problems from stuck notes to screaming digital noise to problems that don't seem to be rooted to particular spots but which move around, happening during playback but not always in the same place. This problem is related to VI's, but I don't know what causes it. What FIXED it for me (and this was long ago in version 4.x or 5.x) was to load the VI, and reload its preset. Rather, I reloaded ALL my VI's and ALL their presets.

I think 95% of the reported crashes in DP are due to poorly (sometimes amateurishly) written plugins. Never mind that some of them are big names, plugin programmers arenot always the top rank, and there can be all kinds of bugs in plugins which the developer was unable to find. VI's can be especially troublesome. Often, I've noticed, plugins are at their worst at the loading or saving of presets. That's when they must interact directly with OSX's file system, I guess, and perhaps when they are often the most vulnerable.

Also, problems like the digital screeching/crashing that I described above seem to be related to a corrupted VI preset, not the one saved to disk, but the one remembered in DP. It may have slight tweaks not saved to the actual preset. I don't have any idea how it all works; I just know that it was reloading the plugin (VI) and its preset that finally stopped those problems. That was the only time I can remember having "irrational" bugs in DP.
