Here's another couple - before (80s) and after(now)

You can tell I'm not embarrassed easily...

Okay... best I could do on short notice. This is early 90s vintage. Note my Mac SE running Performer in the shot! Ahhh... 2" tape baybay!!! :) Just to the left of the Mac SE in the foreground is a Southworth JamBox 4+ (with the firmware mod so each output was discrete) and under that my EPS16+ module. We were printing synth tracks while the SE was slaved to SMPTE that was striped on a track of the 24 track 2" machine. The other fellow in the photo is Mike Harris... legendary engineer in the San Diego area.

When it comes to embarrassment, I tend to excel.

Here are 1980's pics of myself (sax and WX-7) and my duo partner (clarinet and WX-7).

On that SE is a picture I created on the 128K Mac in about June of 1984. Since the bright studio lights prevented it from showing up on the photo, I dodged the Mac screen when printing the photo in the darkroom, then I printed the screenshot separately over the dodged area. The idea, of course, was that the Mac was the 3rd member of our group, comprising the orchestra that backed us up with Performer, of course. Digital Performer was many years away from being launched at this time. Now I wish I'd just used a Performer screenshot, but at the time that seemed too mundane.

We were the ACME Sinfonia, and had hundreds of works in our repertoire, representing at least 50 or more composers from every era, including jazz.
Here is one of our favorites. (Bach Double Concerto Adagio) Unfortunately, it's only a demo. The sounds were DX-7/E!, which were the best I could program at the time.

Augh!.... time! It heals wounds, and yet I continue to embarrass myself with the past. Who can explain it? Who can tell you why? Fools give you reasons: we were never shy!

James - I remember the JamBox. It was so fidgety that we took to calling it the "Damn Box".

I don't miss those days of slaving to time code on analog tape, that's for sure.

Yeah... although do you remember Glenn Workman? I had an aftermarket ROM installed that I bought from Glen's company that made the four MIDI outs independent and it seemed to work pretty well. I got the JamBox+ cheap from a teacher of mine and then found out about the ROM update and got myself a poor man's MTP... until I eventually bought an MTP.

Nah... slaving to LTC from an analog deck was no fun. Although necessity is the mother of invention and it saved time in the studio. I'd have the engineer run me a DAT or just cassette with a mono mix panned to the left and a dub of the LTC that was striped on track 24 of the multitrack machine panned to the right and I could then overdub synth parts at home slaved to the same TC on the master. When I got to the studio I bought the SE and then printed my modules to tape tracks using the Mac slaved to the TC on the multi-track deck. Saved heaps of time! Ahhh... those were the days. :)

Not as bad as the torture of slaving two analog machines, something that most people I worked with refused to do. There were some brave/foolish ones though...
