Re: Digital Performer Tips, Edited
Just a note to say that I altered the original tip sheet somewhat. I moved the copyright and disclaimer stuff to the end of the file, because it seemed terribly intrusive there at the beginning. I also moved the big tip on crackles and pops to the end, because I think it's important to present that information, even if it causes other problems if someone uses it. The warnings are all there. Please don't remove that tip from this sheet, because it's very important that people know about ALL possibilities, and that they have the repair method available. (It's included right after the tip)

Any idea why this one doesn't work for me? I may have inadvertently deleted it from the key commands, but I can't find it in there. What's the Command called? -thanksCategories: Recording, Setup, Playback

It should work. Look under your Studio Menu. About the fourth group down, you'll see Audio Assignments. That's the one. Select it from the menu and see if it works. The Option-A combination should be hard-wired, since it appears in the menu itself.

Shooshie - how do I get hold of the updated tips? Are you waiting to post them or do you have a website?
Thanks for all your work on this - its a great idea. I was reading the manual again yesterday and kept finding myself drifting off as it keeps referring you to other sections which then don't seem to explain what you want. Frustrating ! These tips can be added to with individuals working methods to build an alternative shortcut manual - but obviously I'd like to get the most up to date version.

Shooshie simply keeps editing the first post in this thread. All the updates are there.

What dix said. Any time I add to the tips, I just edit the original post. Here is my process to change or add to the tips:Originally posted by garys:
Shooshie - how do I get hold of the updated tips? Are you waiting to post them or do you have a website?
1- I keep the source in a TextEdit file on my computer. It contains all the UBB formatting characters, in addition to being formatted for TextEdit, so I can see what it will look like, more or less. When changing anything, I open this file first.
2- Make all changes in my source file on my computer.
3- Open the thread in Unicornation and click "edit" for that first post
4- Delete the text
5- Copy/paste the newly revised text
6- Click "edit post" and it's done.
7- If I need to make any last minute revisions before actually posting it, I always go back to TextEdit to do that. It just avoids mistakes on down the road.
Keeping only one source file and making changes only in that file keeps the posted message consistent and up-to-date.

I know JS can't make it a sticky, but maybe we could get him to open a 'Tips'forum that Shooshie can mod.
I would think it would offer a cleaner presentation than the current approach.

…string theory says that all subatomic particles of the universe are nothing but musical notes. A, B-flat, C-sharp, correspond to electrons, neutrinos, quarks, and what have you. Therefore, physics is nothing but the laws of harmony of these strings. Chemistry is nothing but the melodies we can play on these strings. The universe is a symphony of strings and the mind of God… it is cosmic music resonating through 11 dimensional hyperspace.

I've updated the DP database on my site (cvs files too) and added the copyright and disclaimer of mr Sooshie in the zip file.

Re: Digital Performer Tips, Edited
Gotta add this one, 'cause it's pretty un-intuitive to me:
To copy breakpoint automation data from one audio track to another (SE window):
1. Make sure that volume data is the displayed by selecting it from the drop-down window of the source and destination tracks.
2. Select the breakpoint data with the lasso cursor, and then select 'Copy'.
3. In the destination track, use 'MERGE' instead of 'Paste.' If you use 'Paste', the soundbite data in the destination track is erased in the region of the pasted breakpoints.
Here's how that's so non-intuitive (and frustrating): In the manual (DP 4.5, p. 385), it says 'When a data type is made active, it can be inserted and edited independently of other data types.' Then on page 404, it says 'Lasso selection with the pointer tool by itself only selects the active data type.' And then: 'To cut, copy, and paste audio mix automation MIDI controller data in the SE, select it first and then cut, copy, and paste them as usual.'
When using 'Paste' didn't work, I called MOTU tech support and they said it should (or I could use the view filter, which would be way too much work for routine editing).
What I missed (and tech support should have known) was this sentence further in the paragraph: 'If you wish to preserve soundbites at the location where you are pasting, use Merge instead of Paste.'
What baffles me is why anyone would want to paste breakpoint data while at the same time deleting the soundbite beneath it.
Edited 8-16-05: I first noticed this yesterday working in DP 4.12 at a colleague's studio, and wrote that it wasn't in the DP4 manual - but today I found it there. Doesn't make it any less confusing!

Bob, thanks for that one. I went nuts the other night trying to figure out how to do this before finally having to manually recreate the automation on the other track. GREAT!

Re: Digital Performer Tips, Edited
Two more tips added. One from BobK, and another by Tim, gleaned from another thread.
There have been a few things go by which I would have loved to put in the tip sheet, but because I couldn't do it right then, they are lost to the rolling forum. (We DO keep rolling along, don't we!) So, moral of story: if you give someone some good advice, why don't you either repost it here, or post a link to it, or PM me with it. Then I can get it in the Tip Sheet.
To those who are afraid we're helping the pirates, I say let's not shoot ourselves in the foot just to kill a few bugs. The tip sheet has been educational for me, and I thought I knew most of DP. (boy, was I wrong!) So keep them coming; it's good for all of us.

Re: Digital Performer Tips, Edited
Shooshie: not a huge change, but I just edited my post re: copying breakpoint automation. 'Merge' is in fact mentioned in the DP 4 manual - I found it today.
Also, since you mentioned track groups, I should add that if you paste breakpoint data from a single source track into the first of several grouped tracks, the data only goes into that first track - not to all the tracks in the group, which is what I'd hoped.
