If it is between these two for you...also rememebr that Waves seems to have a habit of nickel and dime'ng you for their updates. I bought into waves a while back and now it would cost me about as much as I had paid originally just to upgrade to the latest version. Once you buy a UAD-1 plug...it works for all the cards in your computer (up to 4) for good. Software updates are free. Also, the UAD-1 forum is a good resource for help, etc...

It can be found here

The one waves plug-in set I find very useful is the restoration set. Other than that, for compressors, limiters, a vintage gear sound...the UAD-1 is second to none.

I've heard this enough, I'm starting to believe it, though the Waves Renaissance Bundle truly is outstanding as is the Masters Bundle. I use the RenComp and RenVox profusely ;-) They are extremely transparent and yet beautifully colored at the same time (I know that doesn't make sense, but it's true). In other words, it doesn't sound squashed even at high gain reduction, but adds some nice warmth and fullness to the sound.

Brian is correct in that the UAD will give you more of that classic, vintage sound - and that is a big appeal to me right now - but having had the Waves Gold + RenMax for 4 years, they are still my first call compressors. I am becoming increasingly seduced by the allure of the UAD-1, but I just can't get over the monsterously large dongle you have to stuff in the back of your machine to make it work. I'd be more happy with it (and the idea of purchasing it) if it was just native. Waves Renaissance plugs are very efficient. The Masters can be quite taxing, but they are phase linear and are designed for, well, mastering. Hope this helps.

That is a point to consider. It takes up a PCI slot.

Waves has a usb dongle? correct?

Nope. Waves does NOT have a dongle. I believe you can choose C/R or iLok authorization. I presently have mine authorized with C/R, but I'd like to transfer it to iLok. I just don't want the potential headache that could come with the switch. I'm hearing a voice tell me, "Don't fix it if it ain't broke." ;)

Nope. Waves does NOT require a dongle. Here's a link explaining their authorization methods: C/R or iLok. Waves Authorization iLok is optional. I have version 5 and it is not authorized with iLok.
