I'm optimistic here and thinking this won't be the case. With DP6 motu seemed to have been struggling already for a while with the intel transition etc. DP8 follows the best version ever and I think they learned from the DP6 mess and wouldn't release DP8 unless it's ready.
I think it rather will be a repeat of DP7, a great solid .0 release with not so many big new features (beside 64bit/windows) followed by quick fixes for minor bugs. Then a 8.1 release with new features that didn't make it in time for the 8.0. I feel confident in MOTU these days. (have to admit the windows version has cast a shadow in my heart though)

VST hosting for the Mac would be nice - any word on that?

DP 7 works great under lion. More stable than 10.6.8 in my experience. I look forward to DP 8, and getting to use it on PC or Mac. I wonder how performance will compare between the two? That should be interesting.

I want a DP bible. VST can be hosted in Plogue.

regarding VST implementation in the Mac version of DP8 -what Mac version plug-ins and VI's are VST only, besides the Steinberg ones? Really, i can't think of any. Or let me put it this way - not any that are "must-haves".
Is this really an issue? It's never been for me.

define a point to punch in, DP8 starts recording before the point where you
punched in, and after you punch out. So if, for example, you are recording
a live band and you stop recording when you think the song is done, but the
drummer does some extra bashing after the band stops, not to worry - that
"extra" recording you think you missed is actually there.
Love it!
Punch Guard = Pro Tools Quick Punch, which is one of the few features I miss when working in DP. Dropped that one in the suggestion box a few times. Bravo.

Excellent feature! Thanks for mentioning this; I am more likely to start using punch-ins now as a result (I used them in the early days of my first iMac and DP3 but didn't find the trade-offs were worth it, so simply started doing real-time punch-in placement with deliberate lead time, followed by cross-fade editing after-the-fact).
This makes punch-ins more useful as part of workflow, as it self-documents a project such that you don't feel pressured to take care of the cross-fades right away.

Here's my prediction:
DP is going Windows partly because it's at a very stable place right now. Instead of upgrades being huge revisions, from now for a while, I bet that integer upgrades consist mostly of more plugin bundles, which are likely much easier to code cross-platform (at least, smaller and easier to manage). What I'm seeing is that DP8 is essentially DP7 in 64-bit with some new plugins. Recoding for 64bit was likely a BIG JOB, but now that it's done, DP9 will probably be a much easier thing to do, like the jump from 6 to 7. Then, they can spend the extra resources working on the Windows version.
Obviously, this is pure speculation. But all in all, DP is at a very solid place right now, and probably can afford smaller updates, but with more bundling.

Haiku on MN.
HKMarcus needs some now.
Happy to oblige.
DP and Windows.
Something new to contemplate...
Now within our reach?
64 bit app.
MOTU moves to the dark side.
Gates of Hell so close?
Almost cut my hair.
It was getting kind of long.
Feel like an old man.
OK, I will stop.
But remember that you asked.
Careful what you wish!!

Brilliant! Well, at least the first three stanzas... I feel better already.

Um... those aren't predictions...

Well, the prediction is that future DP versions will have more plugins and less program updates. But I did throw in some speculations in as to why, which is probably what you're refering to.

I'm pulling your-ethra man. I was referring to the first line, actually. Ask Shooshie. I'm just a "skimmer."

I would think that any company to endeavor to move into Windows like this just hires double the programmers and creates basically a whole windows staff that coordinates with higher level program designers. I am sure MOTU has been hiring windows programmers for some time and working them hard,
I don;t know why all these silly arguments occur as if MOTU would use the same 20 guys to program windows while having to maintain their Mac duties. First of all, it is quite possible the 20 DP MAC programmers don;t even know a lot about programming windows.
Ever thought of that?...lol

i already have a nice big pc tower with the new pro windows 64 bit system with ssd and 10,000 rpm drives that links to my mac pro via ethernet...so i can try it pretty easily.
huh.
i will definitely be lookin at the pc platform.
i love my mac pro. so easy to work on. but upgrading to a new one is like 10 grand for what i need, or you can get a pc, my pc has a killer asus mb, 4 pci e 2 slots, 24 gig ddr3 ram, two blazing drives and the new win64 bit pro os , i think it was 2400 bones.

I heard there was a new video engine in DP8. Anyone got the inside on what that's about?
