What on earth are you holding out for!?!?! Treat yourself to a new computer and a decent LCD monitor... even a second-hand G5 will make a world of difference.

You are seriously short-changing yourself. Composing will be MUCH more enjoyable if you upgrade your setup. One day you will ask "What was I thinking?" and "Why did I go without this for so long?"

I'm aware of that, but Apple threw a spanner into the works last autumn when they swapped out the stable TI Firewire chip with a non-working Aguire chip that renders almost anything except the MacPro useless for multi-channel audio.

I've had the money in savings for quite awhile, but am holding out for the next updates, which I thought would happen last week ad WWDC, to see whether I'm better off with a top-end MacBook Pro or can take the risk on a 24" iMac with FW audio interfaces routed in daisy-chain fashion through an external hard drive (the recommended workaround for the Aguire Firewire chip flaw). A MacPro is overkill and requires a lot more saving-up.

This is OT at this point, so my apologies.

I am curious though whether I would have to first install DP 5 on a new computer before installing a DP 6 upgrade. As MOTU allows two installations (same user, of course), I don't recall if the initial authorisation is done via the internet with one's account information and serial number, or via some encrypted files on the hard disc (from previous versions).

But does this make it harder to play along on a VI with a track, to say, work out a part?

I think you're able to turn the feature off (under preferences).

ahhh. Well I use a MacPro so I haven't seen the problem. I use 2 896HDs into the MacPro and have other drives hooked up to the other ports.

I've not tried the setup with my MacBookPro.

The people I know using iMacs to do work are using USB.

What about a G5 tower? You could probably get a dual 1.8 (which is what I had for awhile) for a decent price. It worked with this same setup. I mean, can certainly see holding out for Intel, as the difference even between the G5 I had and my tower was VERY amazing. I doubt they are going to get changed soon as didn't they just bump the speeds of the iMac not very long ago? But I see A LOT of people complaining about the firewire port. Interesting fix though, put a device in line that does work That's too bad.

I would expect not. I'm sure DP calculates the difference between what you are inputting and what it is playing back and then makes adjustments after you press "stop", or something along those lines.

It probably pre-renders tracks that are not armed to record.

It's old news already, dude.

The productivity gains from this release look phenomenal, and scalable.

Not sure why Leopard would be required, as suggested by SixStringGeek.

In fact, it would seem to make sense to upgrade to DP 6 first, due to some of the issues regarding TimeBomb and audio apps.

Of course, this becomes a challenge if buying a new computer with Leopard pre-installed... but it seems most of the audio problems are now worked out and/or that more people understand how to setup the computer properly so that TimeWarp doesn't interfere with real-time recording.

Of course, TimeThief can probably also be set to manual-only mode and/or put to sleep during recording. At any rate, I'm guessing MOTU put a lot of time into making sure DP 6 is fully Leopard-compatible before releasing it.

Oh yeah, that's right -- this is a pre-order, not an actual order! Although in the past, there's never been much gap between the pre-order offers and the actual shipping date.

FWIW I run Leopard with DP. For the most part I can get it to work. There are some issues with the audio drivers on my machine where they can get stuck not working. Mostly it has something to do with Logic and Quicktime. A reboot fixes the problem. DP does not seem to suffer from it. I do know it started when I upgraded to the latest QuickTime and just DO NOT want to reinstall everything as it takes a whole day for me.

You probably know this but, I reverted my QTime back to a previous version, after problems, using Pacifist ( free shareware app. ) Leo vrs available too. It worked fine, quick & easy. Just a thought.
