I know this is not a great idea and requires some quick rehab but it's an idea.

What if you charged another mac on your credit card and at the same time Apple to deliver an RA for repair on your current machine and send it in immediately with a clean main drive. Then, using all of your existing drives get going on the new machine and make sure everything works properly. Near the end of the 14 day period return the computer on their return policy replacing the original clean drive it came with. That gives you at leas a week and a half of loaner and a chance to see if the problem is systemic with the machine your using.

Just a thought.
The mind of the Great T. indeed thinks like that of the feebler hobbit!

It actually is a GREAT idea, T. The only place where I get stuck is where returning the newest "replacement" computer is involved. If it's senseless to jump out of a perfectly good airplane, then it's even more senseless to return a perfectly good Mac! :P

Thing is, a third computer would need interfaces and RAM as well, so there's no real middle ground-- all or nothing. Hmm.

You know, if all my clients would just pay in full in a timely fashion there'd be ever so much less to worry about!

It's the bane of all sole proprietors and independent contractors. Boy oh boy, that work better get done by deadline... but we'll just take our sweet time sending that last check if you don't mind.

I know what U guys are sayin. I had a studio for 25 years. Glad that's over!

On the swap arounds, you could just save your unused ram and stick it in the new machine temporarily if the problem happens with less ram than you have or order the second machine with all the ram you need seeing as how your going to give it back anyway.

Hey if I had the doe i would buy a new one and loan it to you for a month.

This is in addition to the numbers I just posted for DP.

What is kernel task all about?
Sounds like you've compared your "My Processes" with "All Processes" with both the readouts.

A "kernel" is literally the "Grand Central Station" of an operating system where all software and hardware meet in order to communicate and function properly.

A kernel failure is akin to a blocked artery or a drain that is clogged with debris. What causes the blockage can vary, but where info cannot be retrieved and shuttled successfully, the kernel fails in its task. At times this can be caused by incorrect permissions or a currupt file (preference files, plist files, drivers, etc).

This is an over-simple explanation, but that's the basic idea.

T, bless you for even saying that. I already owe you a beer for something or other. Not only is it great to know that people are watching your back, but it inspires me to return the favor.

Actually, I've rediscovered my G5. It's been a great lesson in frugality where my MacPro has been a great lesson in futility. Odd-- I've gotten more music written in the past couple of weeks than got done all year last year! Of 14 orchestrations, 12 are now done!

One of the scores ships to James Taylor, which addeed a "degree of urgency" to my plight. This was not a good one on which to have a computer fail at the last minute, but all is well. No time is a good time for technical failure-- but given a choice, a JT project wouldn't top the list of ones I'd want to fall apart.

At least work-wise, I'm seeing a patch of blue behind the clouds finally. I've got some road work coming up next month, so I'll put the MacPro in just before I leave town. If, for some reason, it has to go back in the shop then I'll spring for a new MacPro. For now, my G5 and my PB are doing the trick handsomely.

Okay-- 2 more orchestrations left and then there are 11 new choral arrangements to knock out. I'd better get back to work here!

And you, kind Sir, are to be thanked for that offer. I just may have to take you up on it yet. Let's see how things go. I'm getting everything out of DP into Finale (with different computers). The hard part is putting in articulations and dynamics, none of which have been yet documented. Once that's all done it all goes pretty quickly.

Well, I certainly wouldn't know what you wanted in terms of dynamics or articulations, but I could easily do some page layouts and proofing. Finale 2006 & 2007. Or whatever... I'm between films at the moment and have some time to kill.
