What is your main Vocal mic

4050 in omni mode sounds like a good idea. I have a small room, so I'm wary of omni mode, but I'll give it a try. For a new purchase though, I would definitely try the Rode, which also has omni and figure eight.
the MXL V69 tube mic, at $300 street, is also cool, but it's sort of a one trick pony, with only cardiod pattern and that ever-present glassy sheen on top. Sounds great on the right track.

Yeah, i'm using the 1176 as a pre. Keep in mind, that I have an Neumann M149, which has an very high output! That being said I normally set the 1176 as follows:
Attack: 5(1 o'clock)
Release: 6(3 o'clock)
Input: 18(1 o'clock)
Output: 10(3 o'clock)
Denpending on the singer, I normally get about approx. 3db gain reduction on peaks. Depending on the mic that you use, you might want to increase or decrease the input level.

Well . . . to go back to the original post . . . I believe the poster already had a pretty good list of candidates picked out given his present mic selection. I would also want to add a good ribbon or something in the range of the Soundelux given his current mic selection. The only thing I might add would be a different flavor of pre to his studio as a way to quickly double his mic closet.

As to the rest of this thread I feel it's a shame that good dynamic mics are overlooked by the GC crowd these days. It's far too easy to take a cheap element and hype it with electronics to stand out in a store setting. This, sadly, seems to be the current trend in condenser mic design. Even Neumann has started to play this game with some of its recent designs.

I always advise kids who are starting out to look at good dynamics first. Make some tracks with proven mics first so that you have a good aural frame of reference. In general, dynamic mics have fewer components than condensers. Therefore, the company can put more money into the element. Give me an MD421 over a cheap condenser any day. I would also, more than likely, take an SM57 over any $79 condenser out there.

Thanks so much for the setting!. I'm going to try that today. I have a M149 which I recently got and I am digging just about anything I throw at it so far.

Well since I was the original poster I guess I should tell you I decided on the Soundelux. I picked it up for 700 in perfect condition but with no shockmount. I bought one of those universal shockmounts for 25$ on ebay and I am pretty impressed.

Now I just need a grand for a great river or john hardy. Oh well.

From a Sound on Sound article about Rick Rubin and the Chili Peppers...

Actually, anthony used a Shure SM7 for his vocals on that album, as you can see in the film "Funky Monks". The SM7 is a killer dynamic mic for vocals. I used one straight into an Otari 2-track reel-to-reel day in and day out while working with voice talent for over two years. Jeff Tweedy from wilco also uses this mic from time to time, and you can see a picture of him with it in the photos on the sleeve of "Being There".

Huge sound. Not for every singer, but definitely a great go to microphone for certain projects.

I mentioned it once before in thos thread but you guys really need to check out the Peluso line. Two flagship mics are based on the U47 and Telefunken 251 for sometihng like a quarter of the price and sound phenomenally good. They're slowly starting to take off. Not affiliated with the company except that I bought 4 of their mics and I have written reviews of them for Tape Op.

on that audiolot site, did you hear the mic comparisons.
the long body, to my ears sounds cleaner on the mid-highs. This looks like a nice buy.

Yeah, Peluso makes some great mics. Very rich and warm, clean highs with that sheen on top. Beautiful.
