This is what I am trying to describe. If these same events were in a part, they would always be selected and there would be no reason at all for me to have to select them, re-select them or anything....they would always be in a group, exactly where I need them to be, and they would be "grouped" in this part. That is what I want to be able to do with DP. Create some soundbites, on different takes that would be always grouped together. Now, at least the way I understand it, if I use a track with a few takes, bump the takes up to the comp, then they are just all there on the track lane. And, should I decide to move these down the time line (or anything else that is with them in their original take lanes) they don't stay grouped and positioned together. If audio events are in a part (Cubase, Studio One, Logic) they stay that way.
So, instead of having to swipe them with the I beam tool, or manually click them with the A tool, or dragging the A tool to enclose them (EVERY TIME I WANT TO MOVE THEM ALL) they are always grouped together because of the part (container, region). Basically, it is just a box that keeps the data contained until I CHOOSE to move any of the events out of the part. This works great. Is there a way in DP to have these events (on the comp lane and all the events on layers below) stay grouped together, and be moveable? This is all I am after...without having to manually select each time I want them grouped.
If this data was in a shared part (2 measures long, for instance) and then this part was shared copied in the song, all I need to do is open any one of the shared parts and change it one time, and it is logically changed in all the places in the song that this shared part is used. Simple. Simple. Simple. No select, no search, no logical 'if and then, except' formulas. One part, one change, all done.Shooshie wrote:Ok, again, select the snares, then go to Search under the Edit Menu. Here is where you will benefit from having a few searches already set up, but it won't take long to set up a new one or repurpose an old one. Use the time grid, set it up for 4/4 bars, and choose ranges of, say, an 8th note starting on all the second and fourth beats. Have this based on the existing selection. It will then select all snares on 2 and 4. Now you can either use the Reshape Tool or the Change Velocity to do what you need done.
The problem is having these events all stay locked into relative position with each other. If I record one track, add another take or two to the track, use the comp tool to send various events to the top lane for the comp....and then need to move the entire group down the time line. I have to grab the I beam tool and swipe all of it, or use the A tool to drag around the selection. Then move it. Work on another track for sound effects or music bed, then have to go back to the voice-over track, I have to open all the takes, make sure that I select them all again (God forbid I miss a corner or miss touching one of the events) then have to move it again. If I could drag-select all of these events and then put them in a fixed group (part, region, etc) then all of the events would be selected when I click on any of them. Because, they would be in a group, staying put relative to each other (part, region) they would all be quickly and easily moved as many times as I need to. THIS, my friend is the problem.FMiguelez wrote:
I really don't see what the problem is... You simply make a time range selection and either, move everything manually with the mouse (or keyboard arrows), or use the Shift command for perfect precision.
There are like one million ways to make VERY QUICK and easy time range selections, from dragging on the top of the Editors, to selecting stuff between markers, to assigning beginning and ending of sections with shortcuts, etc.

Dude, I have read the manual. I recorded radio commercials with the program for 5 years or so. While I can always learn more (and I really am grateful to you, Shooshie and others who are helping me learn more....really, THANKS

Mr. Shooshie, this is exactly what I am wanting...to be able to save a selection, whether it be MIDI note events or audio events. I want the ability to put these in a CONTAINER, or group so that I can freely maneuver them all together without having to re-select them every time. That is IT !!Shooshie wrote:
Geez, I learn something new all the time. I did not know that was there. I've been asking for the ability to save selections, and I guess they gave it to me, kind of.
More specifically I'd like the ability to save exactly what is selected. Notes, controllers, etc. But this is a start. Thanks, MOTU!
I hope you all do not think my aim is to be difficult here. DP IS GREAT !! With parts and Solo on the channel it would even be better. That's it. And here is the deal: DP already has CLIPPINGS which would be the perfect opportunity to put editable clippings in place. How great it would be to have a CLIPPINGS TRACK. A clipping could be created, and then used, but if it needs to be changed, just go to that clippings track, and change it one time then it would be easy to edit a master that appeared "x" number of times in a song.
Guys, this is what I'm after...a better DP. Love it. I'm getting ready to go out to my shed out back now and work in DP to mix about 4 songs from last weekend and upload to the internet. I love it, I just think I could love it more.
Thanks, guys....
