Did you delete your [user]Library/Preferences/Digital Performerâ„¢/Audio Unit Info Cache file after making sure that Waveshell-AU component 8 was installed and 9 was removed, and then running Waves AU Reg Utility 8 (after deleting ...Preferences/Wave Preferences folder? That should force DP to re-validate your AU plug-ins.

In the past when I've updated Waves, the authorization process included a warning that the authorizations for previous versions would be removed and the previous versions would no longer be available. Has Waves changed this? Will V9 be available in addition to the previous version? Or just one of two?

Waves 9 is on a new proprietary authorization that can be applied to either hard disk or any USB flash drive. It no longer uses iLok. AFAIK, an installation of 9 does not invalidate the V8 licenses sitting on your iLok- that would have to be done through the iLok site. So, while it's not very practical to have both V8 and V9 on your system simultaneously, the licenses themselves should not interfere with each other.

Thanks Gary.

It may be impractical to run two versions for one DAW, but for multiple possible hosts, it seems entirely practical, if not necessary.

(I'm less than thrilled that I'll have yet another authorization scheme to deal with. Looks like the iLok fiasco lead to some mistrust. It would be nice for a standard to emerge.)

I can tell you for a fact that will work. e.g., having V8 running for AU hosts and V9 VST & RTAS. Just keep the V8 and V9 plug-ins folders separate and point the hosts to the proper folder. But I wouldn't recommend running both V8 and V9 AU component Waveshells at the same time.

Gary....I didn't do all of the things you mention...but I did do most of them which is probably why it didn't work...thanks for your reply...but I will probably stick with my "Buckaroo" set up until DP8 as I can work around most of the restrictions / frustrations.

Just to be clear....I hold no truck with Waves ...or MOTU for that matter, It's my own fault for jumping the gun!

I am a bit concerned at how long it is taking DP8 to emerge, as the demo'er at NAAM suggested it was all but good to go!

My reference to "screw us over" was aimed at MOTU (not Waves) as the cost of upgrading here in the UK can seem a little excessive. The upgrade from 6 to 7 cost us around $275 (equivalent) including shipping. If it is to be around the same amount for the jump to 8, then some may be tempted to make the move to Logic which is currently $225 (equivalent).

Not me though...having been with MOTU since Performer days I have some sort of misplaced loyalty implant I cannot shake off :P

Thanks again guys for your help.

Best bet may be to run two separate startup discs/partitions one for each version. You can have your "Solid System" known working versions of everything, then have a second "Trial System" to mess around on.

Lemme tell ya JP- I recently did a few projects in Logic. If you count the learning curve and frustration and the radical paradigm shift, a sidegrade would cost you WAAY more than $225!!

For my part, I would just as soon have MOTU take the time to get it right. (Unless the delay is being caused by the Windows release...)

That's pretty much the only clean way to do it if, for example, you need to run DP and Logic on your system. You could do it by manually swapping Waveshell AU Components, but if you mess up just once the hosts will have to re-validate the plugs, a huge time waster.

I've been tempted to install and test Lion on a separate partition (60g), but I've always been a bit confused with what I needed to get up and running on a separate bootable partition.

Do I need to install DP again and any other VI programs and AU (Waves, etc.) I would use, or can I still access those programs and plugs that have already been installed on the computer??

Obviously reinstalling and reauthorizing programs and plugs would be a major time consuming pain.

Thanks,

Tobor

If the idea is to test an entire OS install then yes, you need to install everything that you want to test on that system. You may be able to access the actual previous installs of the applications from the original OS boot partition, but other files installed with those apps (plugins, caches, prefs files) are all either necessary or an important part of such a test.

Yup!

I successfully did this by cloning (Carbon Copy Cloner) my SL system to another disk, and then I did the upgrade to Lion. There were only a couple of programs that needed to be re-authorised (DP for instance) but after doing all the necessary software updates all was great.

It does need to be a complete system clone, i.e. applications, plugs etc.... but your files and sound libraries on separate drives can be used by both systems.

It took a while to do the clone, but there was minimal tweaking required afterwards.

I use the Lion partition almost universally now, but I had to go back to the SL system the other day and all was fine.

Hey guys, I run DP7 and PT10. Can I have Waves 8 installed for DP and Waves 9 installed for DP10 ?

Thanks Stephen!

How do you copy just the OS and the apps/plugs, and how much space did you need? Again, I'm contemplating doing this on a 60g partition.

I think I've got a copy of Super Duper, imagine this would work?

Definitely.

First you need to reset some things about you V8 install-

1. Rename your Waves folder to "Waves v8". Also rename the Waves Plugins folder within that folder similarly.
Delete your WEaves Prefs folder from user>Library>Preferences.
3. Run the Waves AU Reg 8 app and point it to the newly renamed v8 plug-ins folder.
4. Make sure you have copies of the Waveshell 8 AU component available. (Should be in the Wavev8>Waveshells folder.)

5. Now install V9. If there is an option to install only for RTAS and VST (leaving AU out) take it.
6. After the v9 install, make sure that the Waveshell 8 component is still in Library>Plug-Ins>Components. If it has been replaced by the v9 version, delete that file and copy the v8 Waveshell Component back to that folder.

And that ought to do it. V9 for ProTools and VST hosts, and v8 for DP7 and other Audio Unit hosts.
