Waves claimed on the phone today Lion will be long off and said they have not even gotten up to be compatible on anything more than 7.21. That gives you small a clue of the hardship were facing jumping to Lion. I had issues with Waves plugs today not maintaining saved presets. One channel would not save or hold any change in preset yet all other channels would. I ended up reloading to a fresh new 7.24 empty session to fix it. All the other plugs worked fine though. Go figure! This compat issue is huge. Don't mess with it unless you enjoy pain.

I've never used a single Waves product but I have been reading all the negatives on this site for years. YEARS! It's either indispensable or just plain addictive, but surely there must be some alternative. No? I mean, what makes it so 'effin desirable? Certainly not the price.

Some of their plugins are amazing. I include in that list:

C4
Linear Phase Multiband (C5)
L3 MultiMaximizer
Z-Noise
S1 Stereo Enhancer
C1 Compressor
MaxxBass
Linear Phase EQ

And probably many others.
It's not that they're irreplaceable, but you'd have to do some research to find replacements. I haven't seen a replacement for the C4 or Linear Phase Multiband. There is a peculiar behavior about these two plugins, such that the threshold acts more like an attractor, not merely a gate, and it has some unusual behaviors because of it -- behaviors that I use to great effect.

Add to that, the fact that I've just been using them for a long time -- since before there WAS any real competition -- and it makes me a creature of habit. I'm comfortable with the level of abuse they send my way these days. Call it the Stockholm Syndrome, but for plugins. (Maybe the Tel Aviv Syndrome?) Well, whatever. I have loved Waves and hated it, but now I'm more neutral except for in regard to the plugins I listed.

I use the Renascence stuff, Audio track for the gate and compressor, Solo GTR to add sting to rock leads. Also have the hardware L2.

I can't afford the ones you mentioned but will have to try them.

Their open sound pretty much blows away most of the competition IMHO.

I second what Shooshie wrote above about the actual plugins. Waves plugins are generally of high quality.

The issue most people have had with Waves is primarily about Waves the company, especially their upgrade and support policy, which is where most of the complaints have been centered. However, they have improved the model, and while not yet perfect, it is far better than it was a few years ago when they first rolled it out.

Thanks. I guess what is confusing is if the upgrades are very slow (not unlike M-Audio drivers which is, of course, Avid which is of course, Pro Tools) then that would seem to be a bit of a PITA. When you rely on something because it is so good but then have to wait for seemingly forever to get to use it with current systems, it certainly would leave a bad taste in one's ears...

I use and enjoy the Waves plugins. Never had any problems with them.
I find them essential for my workflow.
I started with the Gold Bundle Waves 2, then upgraded to the Diamond bundle Waves 4 or 5 I believe it was.
Yesterday was a big Waves day! I bought and got the upgrade to Waves 8 Mercury bundle.

The July discount prices are good and it was even cheaper buying from Tony Belmont at http://www.highprofileaudio.com/.
Many new high quality and useful plugins make this upgrade a good one.

All showed up on my Waves account and iLok account within a few hours!
I´ll install the upgrade at monday. That´s when I´ll get the iLok2.
Over 110 plugins!!! That´s > 60 more than I had before!

I don´t think WUP is bad as Waves usually puts new plugins into the bundles. One year free updates, and it´s up to you when you wanna renew your WUP after that.
The Diamond buldle was still Waves 7 so I gained this WUP by buying the Mercury too.

Waves recently announced it´s gonna take some time to get Lion ready.
I really don´t consider this to be a problem as Snow Leopard is well-established, stable and will be supported by all software companies for at least 3-4 more years.

The current WUP model can be quite good, but the original WUP model was awful, and that was the source of much of the dissatisfaction with Waves for quite some time. But to their credit, they listened to the customers and changed it.

Has anyone tested DP6 with Lion? I never upgraded to DP7.

DP 6 was bear-ly [sic] compatible with DP 6. I wouldn't even expect DP 7.23 to work correctly.

Which is exactly why I'm not upgrading. I may have to go through the business of creating a special boot partition for DAW work and a different one for general purpose stuff.
