CS does look intriguing, actually been eyeing it for quite a while. I just wish there was AES and XLR connectors...sigh.
wylie, there is the MOTU 8 pre. Kinda depends on the threshold of breaking the bank....
If you like clean Truth has a 8 channel unit, or Presonus. There should be some more options out there.

The 8pre would be good to add 8 channels.
I want to utilize the inputs on the 2408.
This looks interesting http://www.arx.com.au/International/8pre.htm
But I've never heard of them.

Re: How many folks are using DP Mixerless?
Well, you mean AES digital on XLR right? I can't even remember what's on the back of the unit, but I think the analog I/O is on XLR, or at least TRS. Yeah... the fact that it's only S/PDIF is a drag for me too as I don't have S/PDIF. I have a MOTU HD192 and a 24 I/O, so I monitor through the analog outs of the HD192. Still, the converters on the HD192 are supposed to to be as good or better than the ones in the Central Station, so that never bothered me. I would like, however, to have had the accuracy of the metering if using the digital inputs. Presonus includes an explantion on how to calibrate the Central Station's meters to the analog input when you first set it up, but it's not going to be as precise as digital meters. But then probably a moot point as most people are using Inspector XL or something anyway.Tonio wrote:CS does look intriguing, actually been eyeing it for quite a while. I think it sounds really good, and actually Tonio, I noticed early on that the remote unit ran ACTUAL AUDIO through the length of the remote and back again and assumed it would be a problem, but to be honest, I've listened back and forth between the remote plugged in and not plugged in and really couldn't hear any difference. I was worried too because I'm using the remote to literally bring the controls a foot or two closer to me which sounds stupid, but after leaning over and stretching to adjust the volume several times a day, I hooked up the remote anyway.
The remote is worth having. When it was first introduced Presonus ran a special "rebate" where they sent you a free remote when you bought the main unit. Too bad that ran out. Unless you can rack the Central Station in the absolute most ergonomically convenient location, you will want the remote.

I have one. I like it. I have 828 mkII, Mackie MCU faders, big knob for monitor switching/volume control. Love it. Makes jumping among references while mixing really easy.buzzsmith wrote:(any other users care to comment on Big Knob?)

I bit the bullet...ordered both the Central Station and the remote from Sweetwater. Got a fair discount for ordering both together.James Steele wrote: The remote is worth having. Should be here Tuesday.
I checked around and, as you said, there ain't no free rebate anywhere, anymore that I could find re: the CSR-1.

Yeah, that promotion was direct from Presonus when they first launched the unit. Still, I think you'll be quite happy with it!buzzsmith wrote:I bit the bullet...ordered both the Central Station and the remote from Sweetwater. I've been pleased with it. I didn't realize it was quite this pricey...about 1400.00. I think I got mine on eBay around 600.00.
Currently on eBay they seem to be in the 450.00-1000.00 range.

Re: How many folks are using DP Mixerless?
I know this might be obvious, but ask yourself what the most simultaneous inputs you'll ever need. Do you really need 8 channels of preamps? I use my studio mostly for doing overdubs of vocals and guitars, so I spent more money for less channels of higher quality. I went with the Millennia HV-3C on a recommendation of friend and have been happy. It's very uncolored and clean which I felt was safest considering I was going to use this as an all-purpose preamp, figuring I could dirty things up a little bit later ITB if necessary. I wish I had the budget for some different "character" pres, but simply did not.

Yes thats my wish exactlyJames Steele wrote:I wish I had the budget
I'm still trying to wrap my bean around this.
I was hoping to find a pre with gain control/phantom power run that into the inputs of the 2048. don't really need another AD/DA for this.
Then I need another pre for drum mikes.I can get MOTU 8pre cheap used but still looking at others.
6 mikes I have on a drum kit.
2 on amps
2 on vocals.
Line inputs very.
I was thinking of putting the 8pre beside the kit and just running fiber to the 2408 apox 25'.
I'd like to have a small Hi end pre for vocals but that has to wait.
I wish I knew electronics I'd strip the pres out of my board.

Re: How many folks are using DP Mixerless?
I figured you were recording drums and other instruments live. Sounds like you need 10 channels of mic pres, huh? Yeah... I totally get that your needs are different. I was lucky to just focus on doing overdubs with my studio so I spent $1700 on TWO channels of mic pre... $850 each channel. If I needed 10 channels I couldn't have even come close to being able to spend that much per channel. Although, I know there are some really good quality options out there nowadays.

Actually, I was refering to AES (digital) and XLR for analogue connections. I do prefer using XLR connectors for my back side (monitoring). I should get over it, but I surmise there is a difference between the cable response i.e. SDIF vs AES & TRS vs. XLR. Funny I would opt for the better cable in my measly home studio

Though your testimony of not hearing a difference with the Central Stations remote unit has me baffled. Perhaps I have been reading too much high end gear snobs to the contrary? With all the GAS involved, maybe I should wait for Buzzy's opinion, as I have some other "acquisitions" to consider.
Too much Turkey , and I'm talking out my ass, but It seems SPL 2control is what I'm looking for. Its a biaaatch when you can't demo some of this stuff.
