Damn... I hope I have the drive space. I have a 250GB for my main drive and 250GB for my project drive. Where do you guys think the best place is to store the Kontakt instruments/samples? I have my VI ONE library on my Audio/Project drive.
I keep a separate partition of 150GB called "Standalone" that houses ALL my VI files. The directory looks a little something like this:

Garritan for Finale 2010
Garritan Instruments for Finale 2009
Garritan Personal Orchestra
Garritan Personal Orchestra KP2 Library
GPO Library
Kontakt 3
Kontakt 3 Library
KORG
Mach 5 Folder
MachFive2
MOTU MX4
Service Center
Xtreme-FX Info

A partition on your boot drive or on your audio drive, Michael? I wonder if it's worth it to move VI ONE's library if necessary as well as my Mach Five library. Both of them are on the Audio drive and not in any partition, just in a separate folder.

I have two external FW drives for that purpose (of course I don't use FW for the audio, I got the PCI424 for that.) macsales.com has very reliable external drives for not a lot of money...

It is on my boot drive as I have had problems with PSPro (I have to add the "ro" now...) not reading the UFS files unless they were in the root directory - where they still reside. Everything "VI" is in the standalone partition which s part of the 1TB WD drive. All apps and the Mac OS in a second partition on the same drive and a third partition for files, projects, etc. I have a second 500GB drive dedicated to TimeMachine backing up all but the unchanging files.

just got mine 10 min ago, so awesome, I am going to install all the VI's on my main drive but put Kontakt and all samples on an external FW drive.

Native Inst says it's over 60 Gig. It will max out my VI drive. If you put streaming VI's and audio on the same drive then that drive is working pretty hard. I have audio and VI on separate drives.

Right... but the thing is I have two physical drives in my G5 already, right? I don't think I can add another. Also, I have Liquid Mix on my Firewire bus (connected to the front panel FW connector on my G5). If I get an external FW drive, won't that mess up the Liquid Mix reliability? I have a PCI Firewire card, but then I have to get rid of either my UAD-1 or my PoCo Element. :( I'm not sure what to do.

FYI, my Komplete just arrived also, and I think now I need to get serious about where I install my libraries. Perhaps having VI ONE on my audio/project drive wasn't the best idea. "( An additional internal drive would be the best solution if it were possible. I don't want to have to install a larger boot drive, because then it means reinstalling all apps and OS and plugs, etc. Ugh... :(

A USB drive will do in a pinch.

Oh no way... :) You can't be serious, right?

FWIW, I started the install to my Internal boot drive for the samples. Bad thing is that I suspect when this thing is all done I'll only have about 20GB free space left out of my 250 GB drive. Ugh. I think maybe I'll lose my DFHS library which is using up 35GB. I hardly ever use that. I'm going to see how much free space I can clear off on my boot drive. I guess I am going to have to buy a larger hard drive now. :( Or lose the PoCo element and install that FW card.

I'm concerned about having a drive and Liquid Mix on the same FW port. I doubt that would be a good idea. :( Why oh why did Apple limit the G5s to TWO internal drives. Ughhh....

OK, time to geek my geek on...

James, why you wouldn't get a 1TB or larger drive (or two) is a mystery. Drive prices are cheap and you can still keep your "old" drives for access to odd files and storage with one of these puppies:

I've seen them (not this particular brand per se) at Frys for relatively cheap. When I replace my 500GB with a 2TB later this year, I'm sure this is the way I will go. Sure, they might be USB or FireWire but just to move a few files around and archive once you're set up with the new drives, something like this will come in handy.

I'd love me some of those new fangled, no moving part jobs - but they still are a bit over my desired amount to support the R & D departments while they perfect them...

It makes my music 'buttery.' It does use a lot of my bread, but has kept me out of a jam. Yeah, I guess it's pretty crumby...

One thing I can see is that there is nothing between you and the drive noise.

I dunno. Spending all day tomorrow reinstalling system software, apps, plug-ins and authorizing software, etc.?

I suppose I could pull my audio drive, install a new larger drive, then copy apps over to the new boot drive, then once it's done, pull the old boot drive, put the audio drive back in, etc. Just seems like a lot of freakin' work although now I'm down to 26GB free on the boot drive and shrinking so that sucks. Ughhh...
