Well, the one hurdle that helps Apple against those who want a non-Apple Mac is that most people are not interested in diving into Unix's code and hacking it to run on a home made PC. Most people don't that kind of skill, time or patience. For the few that do however, there's really nothing worthwhile that Apple can do about it and it will have a totally insignificant effect a Apple's business.

They had to know that that cloning would eventually be an issue once they decided to go all Intel. To me the lawsuit is just a means of trying to trip up the competition. For us consumers, a $400 Mac Clone is a great 2nd, 3rd etc. machine to run VI's on.
Or make a great first computer for our kids etc.
It might force Apple to drop prices on Mac Mini's and iMacs
So if they lose, we the consumer win!
I agree as well, the consumer will benefit and Apple better tread lightly as they have the spotlight on them more than ever.

That's what he gets. It's the karma for putting out this wireless keyboard with no keypad, I'm sure.
(that's a joke. After all the good things Steve has unleashed into the world, I can live with one lousy mistake, and this little Apple Wireless (incomplete) Keyboard is definitely a lousy mistake) I've got both a new wired Apple Keyboard, and a new Wireless Apple Keyboard, and I love them both except for the function keys and the lack of a keypad on the wireless. But I'll make another thread out of that.
Back to the terrible Psystar that's breaching the hull of USS EnterpriseApple! I can feel the Apple Magic flowing from the hull. The incredible, precious Apple ThinkDifferent Switcher Macintosh Way MacWorld Logic Magic Elixer... the fuel of the Mother Ship! It's pouring out of the hull. It's been breached, man. We're all going to die! Well, in 70 years or so. Meanwhile, we may have to live with cheaper Macs. What if Apple quits making them altogether? That would mean that we'd be stuck at Leopard forever. That would mean that software development could focus on this one version and perfect something for a change, and we could just have this single kind of Mac forever. Not a bad place to stop, really, but it might soon go the way of BeOS, or Atari, or Apple ][ computers, or Opcode StudioVision. Kinda scary.
To say the least, the next 3 months ought to be very, very interesting.

Another interesting development:
The entire Psystar endeavor has encouraged Rob Griffin at Macworld to try a brave experiment-- called The Frankenmac! It's more of a blog than a walkthrough on how he rolled his own Mac clone.

Yeah... but Steve is nothing if not a fighter. He'll get the engineers to figure out a way to break the OS on unauthorized platforms. I wouldn't touch a Psystar... well not unless you're willing to go with something that will ultimately break. True... you could never update the OS, but somehow or another apps may break as well down the line.

No Twysted Psystar for me, thanks.
I just get the feeling that there's a lot more quiet cloning going on-- maybe not for sale, but for those not running intensive DAWs, etc., they may just be the very ones with less on their minds and more time on their hands to venture into...

Guys this is nothing new. It has been going on for a long while among home hobbyists. As soon as the intel macs came out, basically. (I doubt any of the hacintoshes are robust enough to work as DAWs)

Apple is of course aware of it, there is a kext that gets installed with OS X that says "Don't Steal OSX."
Apple seems to have looked the other way and tolerated this among the DIY hobbyists. I am guessing Apple may see it as a positive in exposing Mac OS to those who normally wouldn't look at it.
Often what you see is people who mess with OSX86, and then say "This is great, I am getting a Real Mac!"
But when somebody tries to sell hardware as a Mac Clone, that seems like a whole different ballgame. We'll have to see what happens.
