Is it normal that I can't open the ASIO settings or any of the MOTU applications when an audio program is running?
When I try to open the Audio console, I get this message:
"Cannot open while audio applications are running, close all audio applications and try again"
....which I do, but it still doesn't work unless I reboot the computer and open the Audio console before any other program. You can imagine I had a jolly good time finding the right buffer rate to fit my system. Had to reboot for every change

on windows, with motu you cannot open the panel unless there is an option in the software you are using (i.e. both cubase 4 and the ik stuff I have do indeed have this option)
For those who really are willing to work with audio and 828

...MOTU and Cakewalk have worked closely together to bring FireWire audio to Windows 2000 under WDM, and we're thrilled with the performance...

Hahahaha, no man, im not being ironic:) It has gotten this far, that im researching "backwards" when this mk1 was fresh. Makes sense?
Maybe this way I`ll exclude any "NEW" windows components like the sp2, internet configs, drivers, and all unnecessary microsoft %$ยท##" for this "OLD " firewire hardware.
So im seriously thinkig about installing windows 2000 on a new hd. For music purpose only. And on another hd ill have internet etc.
Wanna try it but aint got the time right now. so if anybody knows something, let us know.

If you grab the Windows 2000 drivers (3.5.3.2) from the MOTU website, they work fine on XP with the 828MkII ... they were the most stable by far ... but obviously they might not work with the MkI. These are the drivers I use on my (XP) music partition. Personally I'm a fan of having a non-networked partition dedicated only to a few music applications ... concentrates the mind! Otherwise I end up noodling on the internet for hours. The original reason, and main advantage, is that I keep an image of the music partition so that if anything gets screwed up, I can restore the whole thing in a few minutes.
Personally I'd recommend staying with XP, but by all means do a clean install and also definitely install SP3 now that it's out. Windows 2000 will probably work, but who's going to support your applications on it?
