Master of Puppets was the best. I have a dvd of Metelica with the San Francisco Symphony it is so cool sound wonderfull.

Haven't heard it in 20 years, mind you; I bought the record on import, loaned it out and... goooone!

The clarity, tuning and general perfection of it all seriously impressed me at the time.

Most of my guitar-player friends mention Bill Frisell as a favorite. I don't think anybody's mentioned him yet.

My "main" axe is a (gulp!) vintage steinberger. One of the little graphite suckers with 3 pickups. You know the ones. It's my main because it's...well, perfect. (I gulp because I bought it new in '88.) My Fave guitar is a red '64 Gibson Trini Lopez. One of the few I've ever seen whose headstock has never been broken off. It's the devil in the flesh/it's iron in my soul.

Whatever double-ball .010s I come across for the Stein, D'addario light top/heavy bottoms for the trini. I change 'em when they seem lifeless...which depends on how much I play and the weather.

Yay, wheever. It's kind of a "getting acquantied thread" in disguise. I'm eating the info up like crazy.

Steinberger. I was going to ask about that one. Interesting price ranges on ebay, last I looked. But I'd no more buy a guitar on ebay than I would a pair of shoes. (Gotta try before you buy.) For the price of some, I'd do better going with a good Les Paul, or that coveted Harrison/Atkins Country Gent. You were wise to hang on to your Steiny!

Ha! I was wondering what your (hidden) motive might be! It's really interesting to see the range of preferences/styles/influences. This really is a great group of peeps.

What I love about the Steiny (

) is it's sort of the electric guitar distilled down to its absolute functional essence, like a good tool or weapon: what's there is just what's needed, there's nothing extra, nothing flashy or frivolous. On top of that it's tiny, and well nigh indestructable--speaking of weapons you could beat a stage-crasher to death with it and then get back to the set!

And never mind that it plays and sounds awesome!

Yeah, try before you buy! If a country gent is what you're hungering for, you won't want a Steinberger. It's more in the Strat category, playing-wise--though way better, in my opinion.

And I totally forgot to mention my Acoustic in my last post!

It will be mad at me!

It's a custom made from my custom design by an incredible luthier in North Adams, MA named Steve Sauve. It's a 00 upper bout coupled with a dreadnought lower bout; german spruce top; mahagony everything else; ebony fingerboard; asymmetrical neck. It sounds like no other acoustic on the planet. It sounds like it has a big-ass compressor on it--it actually gets *louder* as you sustain a note. It's bizarre! It's magic! It records like crap! But it's really loud and fills a room with sound like no guitar I've ever heard. (And I use 80/20 brass strings on it.)

Sure, but not right now. I'm in NYC for a wedding, and it's in VT.

It's pretty minimalist in terms of binding, inlays, etc. I'd love to know people's responses to it. I had it built in '81. Steve SuavÃ© still builds guitars. He's amazing!

Larrivee L10B acoustic is the one I play. I also have a Les Paul Jimmy Page sig. and a Clapton sig. Strat. I only play acoustic music these days.

Don't have one at the moment. But I like the size playability and sound of the Maton EBG808TE.

3. What are your preferred pre's, heads, cabinets and cables-- and style of music?

I use an AER Compact 60 acoustic guitar amp. Fingerstyle acoustic style

4. Strings!! Gauge? Brand? Frequency you change them?

D'Addario Phos. Bronze/Custom Light Change every couple of months.

5. Name your top five favorite guitarists or bassists of all time.

Tommy Emmanuel
Laurence Juber
Jimi Hendrix
Eric Clapton

What an awesome instrument the guitar is. My fascination with it is life-long. It was just a twist of fate that kept me from it and sent me to the piano... Chalk it up to one of these quiet hobbit passions.

It really is a great group. It's really cool to digging deeper to see the diversities and similarities in interests.

Earlier on, I'd sort of hinted at a desire to pick up my otherwise dormant guitars again. Part of it was spurred by this Fab Four virtual instrument soon to come-- and a desire to get a guitar controller. But being able to just lay my own guitar tracks will force me to practice and, more importantly, to listen.

I was impressed with the sound I heard people getting out of it, and it was such an oh-so-cool design to boot.

Dunno-- the Gent and the Steiny are indeed two very different instruments, but that may be a good reason to have them both. I have two solid bodies, so I'm sure my next one will be a hollow body. I need to choose between the Gent and the Gretsch Tennessean. Then, the winner will be in the final three along with an Epiphone Casino and one of the Gibson Archtops. I'm also taking notes on amps and peripherals from everyone's posts here.

But I think my next purchase in guitar world will actually be the Axon guitar controller. That alone will open up whole new avenues in virtual world in DP. Still, I'm going to have to hit the wood shed before the wood shed hits me!

It's SauvÃ© #005. Commissioned in '81, finished in '82.

A "mystic" friend of mine named it Orion. I like the fact that it's named, like a strad, or a ship.
