We have released a small maintenance in SDA for the Groove Agent SE Content “Production Grooves” to Version 3, that fixes an issue with double entries in Steinberg Library Manager.

Just bought it and looking forward to trying it out. Seamless transition between velocities has me very excited, and there is a lot more to this package. Requires Full Kontakt , will run only in demo mode in Kontakt Player.

I'll take a guess, but also to raise a gripe. Some developers don't normalize their samples, and only offer as many dynamic levels as there are sample layers.

The correct way, IMHO, is to normalize all the samples, use velocity to scale level from 0-127, and to switch layers. This way sample 1 plays from 1-20 (e.g.), while the level increases gradually, then hands it off to sample 2 which takes over and increases in level from 21-40 (e.g.), That gives you smooth transitions between velocities.

Unlike good piano VIs, all the guitar VIs I've used to date have obvious timbral shifts as they are played at different velocities. It takes more than volume matching to get samples to play nice together, especially if velocity layers are few, as seems to be the case with a lot of guitar VIs.

Take a look at the Pettinhouse demo video; he demonstrates the smooth velocity response the 4.0 version of his Direct Guitar promises. I've yet to try it, but will soon and don't expect to be disappointed.

Thanks for the explanations. I’ve noticed the discontinuous timbre you mention, and yes, it’s more obvious with guitars, but didn’t think much about how to fix it.

I've been having fun with Direct Guitar 4.0 this afternoon.

The guitar samples are very bright (it IS modeling a Strat, after all!), but I've been coaxing sounds I really like in a variety of styles using the DI4.0 DRY preset, followed by an EQ plugin with a lowpass filter adjusted for different styles followed by a Compressor and finally, Guitar Rig 7. With pick position and the lowpass filter, I can take the sound from Strat bright to a lot mellower, and the compressor emphasizes or smoothes the attack depending on threshold and attack time.

I've suggested to Pettinhouse that he add to the User Interface (so we don't have to go under the hood):

Modwheel to LFO Vibrato
Adjustable Pitch Bend Range

Also, I find the vibrato on E3 Mid-Neck bothersome when running a distorted sound. Same with E4 thru G4 in Mid-Bridge. These notes sound fine with clean amps, so I may just have to live with it, but he might consider resampling without the vibrato. I do like the subtle vibrato on the hammer ons though; a nice touch.

DI4.0 has me having a lot of fun with arpeggiated stuff; very inspiring! It is nice to not encounter undesired radical timbral shifts. I will definitely be using it in future projects!

It's a good thing I go by and check every so often, because good ol' Boz doesn't tell users crap about updates when they happen. So I just happened to discover this update by going into my downloads and painstakingly comparing version numbers in PlugInfo with the version numbers on their site.

Pro Tip: Boz can't always get the site updated correctly. Here's a surprise gem. The Pan Knob 2 download link on Boz's site will show as Pan Knob 2.1.0 (Mac)... but guess what?! Click it and you'll get version 2.1.1. Seems they have an error on the site. Enjoy. (After this not being fixed for months, I finally broke down and just now sent Boz a message about this link being incorrect.)
