Small bump in the road... the app I've been using since the beginning of this journey is an amazing open source app called Seashore. Very simple, very clean, does all the basic stuff needed for this work. Unfortunately, in Snow Leopard it seems to have a problem maintaing color levels when cutting and pasting. This is going to slow me down till a) they fix it or b) I find an alternative. They haven't updated this app in a loooong time, so I'm not too optimistic about that.

I'm looking into the other opensource alternatives, as I don't own PhotoShop or Ilustrator. Gimp does everything, but the interface is TERRIBLE. Like a badly ported Windows app. Looking into a couple others.... will let you know. Sorry for the slowdown.

Pixelmator seems quite good, though it costs a bit.

I literally *just looking* at this one. Seems well put together. I'll see if it can do what I was used to doing in Seashore.

Not free, but not expensive is graphicconverter.

pixelmator can't figure out the .xcf files I used with Seashore. Gimp can. Sigh. Gimp is very very powerful, just terrible to deal with.

Have you tried Photoshop Elements to see if it would work for you? It's far less expensive than the main Photoshop but for most editing work it has the essentials. Also, Adobe gives a 30 day full feature demo.

Gimp is actually turning out to be more manageable than I had originally thought. It's a little weird, but extremely powerful. Things are moving forward.

Amplidood, here's a version of Gimp that uses a different GUI, and is closer to Photoshop in UI terms, but is still Gimp underneath:

http://www.gimpshop.com/
GIMPshop is a modification of the free/open source GNU Image Manipulation Program (GIMP), intended to replicate the feel of Adobe Photoshop. Its primary purpose is to make users of Photoshop feel comfortable using GIMP.

It shares all GIMP's advantages, including the long feature list and customisability, while addressing some common criticisms regarding the program's interface: GIMPshop modifies the menu structure to closely match Photoshop's, adjusts the program's terminology to match Adobe's, and, in the Windows version, uses a plugin called 'Deweirdifier' to combine the application's numerous windows in a similar manner to the MDI system used by most Windows graphics packages. While GIMPshop does not support Photoshop plugins, all GIMP's own plugins, filters, brushes, etc. remain available.

Everything I read said that GimpShop and Snow Leopard don't get along. Will try it out.

Dark is nearly ready. These new versions for 7 will be interim versions, just getting what was already there in place and not trying to get every little niggling detail taken care of just yet. I know a lot of you are suffering the standard GUI and need some relief.

And let me add that I was wrong about Gimp. Yes it has to run in X11 and all the key shortcuts are not Mac-standard...but this thing is a MONSTER. It does so many things automatically that I was having to do extra steps to accomplish in Seashore. I'm already getting extremely comfortable with it. It's sooooo much deeper and I'll probably never discover all that it can do.
