Re: Dolby Atmos
Is this the Atmos solution for DAWs without Atmos compatibility? …I’m not entirely sure, but it appears to be.

Re: Dolby Atmos
As a music consumer I couldn't care less about Atmos. Even as a film consumer I think it's overhyped. But we as working professionals can't afford to ignore it anymore (plus I dig learning about music tech), and neither can MOTU IMO. And really, with the Fiedler Dolby Atmos Composer in mind, I don't think making DP, at least more, Atmos-friendly would be that difficult - meaning more track/aux formats (7.1.2, 7.1.4 etc). From what I gather panning in the Atmos Composer (and in the Dolby Atmos Renderer app I think)is handled within the plugin. Meaning that MOTU wouldn't need to implement these tools. ....possibly. these are armchair assertions. i haven't actually tried DAC or DAR. just watched youtube videos.

Re: Dolby Atmos
It remains to be seen I guess if Dolby and the big players in the industry can shove it down our throats for music.
I just know that I'm among the people that doesn't have the space nor can afford to install a proper Atmos space in my home studio, to even contemplate it.
There's a lot of debate surrounding this. If streaming services start requiring Atmos mixes to even be ON the service, that's going to present a problem. I've hard rumors of it being a requirement to be added to a promotional playlist. I imagine one could be missing out on all those .00001 cents or whatever it is per stream.
Admittedly, I don't know that much about it, but I get the distinct impression that this is a move by the upper echelons of the industry to reclaim territory they may have lost to small, independent studios so they can push the little guy out and be the gatekeepers again. Seems like if an artist actually WANTS an Atmos mix, most of them won't be able to do it themselves properly because of the limitations on finances and physical space and will have to go to a larger studio and pay up for it. And it's gonna take a lot of streams to recoup that I guess.
Oh well... like many I couldn't care less about listening to music on Atmos. Sounds, again, like it's something being shoved onto consumers by the big players so they can grab more cash.

Re: Dolby Atmos
Dolby Atmos will be popular in theaters or such big closed room avenues for some time.
Less and less companies will be producing with Atmos.
It is not possible to make user experience at every spot inside the theater, sound will be awkward for people sitting on the sides or front or rear.
This technology will die soon and will never be popular. The 6+1 may survive for little more time.
Regards.

Re: Dolby Atmos
I've seen a few videos online debating the whole Atmos thing. One point that is brought up is that the vast majority of home consumers still watch movies with the speakers that are built into their televisions. It's not likely many consumers are going to install one of the home "Atmos" systems in their living rooms. It really feels like this is a "solution" in search of an almost non-existent artist and consumer demand. This feels like it is being pushed from the top down. There was no groundswell of demand for this.
As far as music goes, I truly hope (personally) it goes the way quadraphonic did in the 70s.

Re: Dolby Atmos
Yes I agree, as do many many audio professionals that Atmos is simply a way to sell everyone a bunch of stuff and/or to entice civilian, non audio people into movie theaters.
However, more and more clients are asking me if Atmos is on the menu, and it’s not really practical (and a little foolish) to talk them out of it. Since it’s now pretty cheap (see link above about the Fiedler Atmos Composer) to create binaural Atmos mixes for music it doesn’t seem unreasonable to accommodate them. Binaural Atmos isn’t ideal, but 90%+ of Atmos music tracks are consumed with headphones so it seems to me that it would be okay.
