James, I never really had to use the MIDI volume automation, but I just tried it in VA-1 and VA-2. Neither of them respond. Does VA-1 respond for you?
I don't know. I'm betting it doesn't. Since it's not a VI that has "multis" it's probably a non-issue.

I just found it curious.

Yep. The ones that I heard that sounded difference had to do with the chorus. There was more chorus effect/depth on the patch in VA-1. Not a big deal.

Yes, I now remember that was it, thanks.

Guys, did you do MIDI Learn? I set volume to CC#7 and it did just fine. Every control on the VA-2 can be MIDI controlled through MIDI Learn.

Thanks for the reminder. I didn't think of it because things like pitch-bend and modulation are recognized without having to use the MIDI Learn function.

Same here! That's my story and I'm sticking to it!

But you're right... things like that are usually already setup... volume and pan (Controllers 7 and 10) at minimum.

There is a confirmed problem with VA-2 in DP 7.24 on Mavericks (10.9) that cause DP to crash during launch if the VA-2 AU is enabled. I emailed AAS and they contacted MOTU who acknowledged the problem was on their (MOTU's) end. The problem has been corrected in DP8, but is still an issue for 7.24 running on 10.9.
The work-around is to try to quickly skip the AU validation for VA-2, then open the plug-in mgr and disable it.
