I think the PDF manual will be integrated in DP8, like it is done in Logic, Wavelab and other software. Under the "HELP" menu.. Problem solved!! :)

I'm not explaining it very well.

Don't worry, I've been using Mid-Side for twenty years. I understand its workings and advantages, and have drawn diagrams to explain it to other people. It just never occurred to me that someone could make a plugin to do that with regular stereo audio, but I can see how that's done.

In Mid-Side, a cardioid picks up the center of the sound for both tracks. A figure 8 mic positioned on the same vertical axis, but rotated 90 degrees from the front, picks up the non-cancelling difference, which gets added back into the channels via the matrix, making each channel uniquely left or right. The amount of the figure-8 signal that you add back in determines the amount of that difference, thus making for wider or narrower stereo sound.

One of the great advantages of Mid-Side is that it's the only form of stereo which is truly in-phase with its monaural fold-down. That makes it excellent for broadcast.

I've used mid-side in recording many times, but maybe a decade ago, it was explained to me as this amazing way to deconstruct a stereo track into something besides left + right, and process the center and sides rather than one side vs. the other. Keeps getting cleverer and cleverer.

Someone else (besides me) has suggested that ALL ROMplers and ROM-based synths that boast stereo samples (especially piano) should be using M-S samples-- adjust width, mono-compatible, etc.

But I digress.

I ORDERED MY DP8 THIS MORNING!!!!!!!!!!!! :woohoo:
M1 MBP; OS 15.3, FF800, DP 11.33, PC3K7, K2661, iPad6, Godin XTSA (w/ SY-1000), 2 Ibanez 5-string basses (1 fretted, 1 fretless), FX galore

A PDF manual is long overdue, but I find myself a little sad about it. Its only a matter of time before we lose the hardcopy (but gain a forrest!). That said (guessing Radiogal's guess is wrong), an iPad with a DP8 manual would be extremely helpful!

iLok seems unlikely. It'd be part of the specs if it were being implemented I would think. Embedding a pdf into Help wouldn't help much with copy protection. So what, no copy protection?

…either way, its all so geeky-exciting!

I doubt copy protect will be gone and was kidding about that. May we still have key codes as at least one early adopter didn't mention any changes. I would imagine if there were we'd hear about it right off.

Though he's not prone to sarcasm, given the rhetoric that the subject inspires, Dave could be kidding about the PDF manual….?

I am assuming that if an ilok were required it would have been part of the order process. It would be a bummer to get DP8 and then realize that you needed to purchase an ilok to get it to run. So...on that assumption, no ilok :woohoo:

If I were not an "official MOTU guy", I would be ever so tempted.

The manual is indeed included as pdf and printed.

Did I mention that DP8 uses one of these for copy protection:

slack this,lol.
More cautious than slacker but I so want to take advantage of 64 bit and don't really care about any of the 32bit projects I've been working on recently I'm starting everything new moving forward.
So I'm going to try to stay parked in 64bit land as much as possible.

I see help menus but so far haven't spotted the PDF manual, will look and pm to my friend RG ;-)

RG,if you want to call me Captain,I might lose whatever sense of decorum I have left & believe me we're walking a very fine line.......but you can call me anything you want!

I'm just glad MLC isn't saluting! lol. & if as i suspect he is,please please please don't tell me,that's 1 nightmare I want to avoid!

Was there ever a tab in DP to contact tech support before,I just noticed.

Changed to hardware theme,nice look.
Figured out my missing FXpansion plugs would need to be updated to a beta to run 64 bit so will hold off on them.

System seems to run way more efficiently in 64bit,more plugs than I realized are not 64bit yet.
I have more than enough to make do as is.
I need to search to see if there's been some 64bit updates I missed.
But I'm surprised there's so many plugs and VI's still not 64bit.
It's nice to see other companies now have to play catch up with DP8 ;-)

current count in my system
AU 32bit about 400
AU 64bit about 200
After I update my Waves and UA the 64bit # will be closer to 250 or 275
I want to see how much I can get done starting new work in 64bit,I really will not need the UA until i get further along in the new projects,i will start in 8,hopefully they update by the time I need them.
Tommorow I will try to update the Waves stuff to 64bit.

So far so good and DP8 looks like a nice stable upgrade ,so far.
