The OP states they have been using DP since it's inception. I know I don't need the manual to do any work in DP unless it's some off the wall thing. You'd think they'd got the hang of DP by now if they've really used it that long.

That's because not everybody is a know-it-all like you, Harley.

That looks like a great format, and someone has gone to some trouble to post what appear to be shots from the manual, but I'm wondering about the advice. For example, under Work Priority it just says to leave it set to
High. Well, that's the default. If you're looking it up, it must be because of some suspicion that it may not be set right. MOTU recommends setting it to high for all their audio interfaces, but some interfaces require a Low setting. Not much help there.
If it makes the table of contents entry for you, that would be a great format for our Tips Sheet. Our tips are starting to get a little long-in-the-tooth, so a reworking would be timely. I wonder if this would be the thing to use for redoing the tips? Time to look into it a little more deeply.

Yes, but the point I think that was being made... and you helped make it... is that SOMETIMES you run into one of those "off-the-wall" situations where you need to find something in the manual... something you're not familiar with that is out of your normal routine. I know if I were going to be using DP away from my studio, I'd feel better having a manual nearby if I ran into a situation where I got stuck.

Yeah, I'm fine with the stuff I do in DP every day, or a couple of times a week. But if I haven't done something in a while (like for a couple of weeks or a month or something), I simply forget how to do it. Even if I've done it many times before. The length of time I retain things is getting shorter and shorter, too. It's very alarming. Thank goodness for the DP manual and Evernote. I'd have a hard time without them.
My feeling is, it's time to make a PDF manual available to the customers who have paid money for DP (and the updates) instead of not making it available to the people who haven't. Does that even make sense?

I think it does.

I disagree. But that's just my opinion. It might be a hassle to lug the book around but it's doable. I don't have any desire for a PDF myself but I understand why some people do. Even still I'd rather not do anything to make life better for the pirates. Apple isn't going to feel the piracy issue but MOTU might. Ultimately it's up to them. I just know if the put the manual out in PDF I'd never use it so long as I had the printed version.
Anyway here we are yet again beating the old PDF dead horse again.

Even though we disagree, I do understand and respect your opinion, James.
One of the main reasons I would like a PDF manual is, more and more I have to use text-to-speech because of my poor vision. There, I pulled the ol' sympathy card.

Did it work?

I realize this isn't a problem for most, but it really is an issue for me. A PDF manual would make things so much easier. I do have access to a KNFB Reader, but it takes so long for it to process the pages, and I have to find the pages first anyway. To be able to search in a PDF and have Alex read to me would be such a relief.

Well, I just upgraded to Logic 9 (don't know why.. thought there might be something nice in there, but it looks and feels exactly like Logic 8 - what use is 64 bit if i don't use the program...).
Sorry to rant, but there is no longer a full manual for it - it's pdf only.

Any app I have that comes PDF only I've always printed it off so I have a hard copy.
Something about getting stuck, taking my hands of the computer to look up something in a manual just seams like a necessary break for me.
I hope they never get rid of the manual I would hate to have to print the DP one myself.

There may also be a pride thing going on to some degree. Especially with a client in the room, picking up the DP bible may make one think they look inexperienced. IOW 'this guy/gal still hasn't read the manual or know the software?' Whereas pulling up a file looks more high tech and the perception changes to 'wow, this guy can really zoom around his machines. '
It's all a matter of preference and/or perception. I like the fact that those of us who actually have the book by having paid for the program have a significant edge over the mindless creeps who are using the 'free version. '
It behooves one to know what they need to know before setting sail. If you still need a map, then take the frigging map. If all you need is a compass, try the Help menu.
