I have to admit that - tho I have been able to make limited use of Mach 5, the reason I paid all those hard earned sheets of cash was to use the much publicised and demonstrated features of the new version. :?
No question--- MachFive users got dissed. Not having any substantive info on the delays offered little encouragement. The only thing that was released was a fairly scripted note that went to those who e-mailed MOTU saying it was "on it's way" or "it would be ready when it's ready".

I can certainly understand that MOTU didn't want to be hounded, but they risked a certain loss of trust by keeping users so far out of the loop. 2.5 years and counting--- in all that time can anyone be blamed for buying another product? What remains is the question of how many of those who bought K2 or another sampler now have no use for any version of M5.

So many people held off on buying a MacPro just because they placed so much value in their MachFive library. Others who were not aware that M5 was not Intel compatible or those who had faith that MOTU would deliver M5 by the time they got a MacPro got hosed.

One thing that might have helped keep tempers from flaring so much would have been a simple blurb on the main page of MOTU's site saying something to the effect of:

1. M5v1.2.3 is the latest version and is not Intel compatible
2. M5v2 has been delayed because of -------- (reasons beyond our control)
3. M5v2 will be the first version that will be Intel compatible
4. Our original promise to registered M5 users to upgrade to version 2 (will/will not) be honored

So many other developers put such info on FAQ pages or version history notes in one single very easy to find spot. If the release of M5v2 is not among the most frequently asked questions, then I don't know what is.

But, this is where humour has proven to be a healer. I've laughed away my anxiety over M5v2. Now, I'm wondering if I've not laughed away my need for it as well. If it's still being offer for free, then it may be a non-issue.

I'm hoping that it'll be so good it'll blow the competition out of the water. And I reckon they will honour the free upgrade committment.

I really hope you are right.

MOTU needs a grand slam right now. By that, I mean I've grown weary of always reading raves about everything but MOTU. I mean, WE know they're cool, but I want to see it in lights streaming across Times Square!!

I really hope for our sake and MOTU's that M5v2 is clearly better than K2. If that kind of word got around, it would be huge buzz. It just can't be different for the sake of being different... and it's got to be stable!!

One thing's for sure-- authorizing M5 will be tons easier than anything NI puts out!! Just upgrading K2 can kill your authorization.

What I dread most? Any threads that might appear saying M5v2 crashes MacPro. That would be the end of my cadence.

That's the spirit, mate.
You don't sound so... miffed any more.

I share Frodo's fear; a flurry of complaints/bugs shortly after release may well feel like the ground (hog?) smacking us at 200mph.
Of course, we'll still have our collective sense of humour, meaning all won't be lost. :D

Why I need Version 2....

Post by jahngra »

When my Powerbook died several months ago, I needed to buy a new machine immediately to keep working. I wasn't about to shell out big money for a non-Intel mac - of course I upgraded to a Macbook Pro

Now the ONLY music/sound software I own that is not compatible with my new machine is MachFive. Everyone else got with the program rather quickly.

This is not the first time I've been burned by MOTU - I have loads of scores written in Composer's Mosaic which require me to keep around a machine that can run OS9!

I'm quite certain I know how to make M5v2 ship. I just need to put in an order for kontakt2. :?

Probably in the next week or two if nothing changes. I have no sampler. I need a sampler. I own M5 but was suckered/failed to read the fine print.

I feel kind of 'taken'.

SSG-- I already tried that: it didn't work! :P

But, it's not out of the question that by the time you get through NI's registration hoops and garters that M5v3 will be shipping!

well,

i don't like NI that much...

but being without a sampler for more than half a year gonna turn me toward NI i'm afraid...

as there is little hope that there will be an update

i set myself a deadline...

if m5v2 won't be there before august i go for the alternative....

to bad, you will see that the release will be the day after i bought Kontakt

I didn't have any success with Kontakt on the last skydiving outing.
I have the 2.2 Version of the Native Instruments sampler but it didn't slow me down any more than MachFive did during an epic free-fall and the usual sudden stop.
Should I have registered it?
I'll be out of the hospital in six months.

You lack my special place in the universe as chief entertainer/victim of the gods. :-)

Anyhow, NI isn't so bad. I have their B4 organ VI - it works and I'm quite fond of it.

Maybe you could flog them a copy as a lab rat of sorts.
They could unleash Machy on it and generate roadkill vapourware. :D
