Aren't we due for an DP update sometime soon?

The nice thing about beer is you can enjoy them all. There are only three err four official ways to open one that I am aware of and the learning curve is over by the second swig. There are still subtle discoveries but its mostly enjoyment after that.
With DAW's the learning never ends. There are so many features in DP 4.6 that I still haven't explored and I just upgraded to 5.11 which means I also upgraded from OS 10.3.9 to 10.4.8. Personally I wouldn't mind if the inevitable upgrade didn't come until it was thoroughly beta tested and pretty much going to work without worry. I like the stability of 5.11 so far. I can't imagine trying to learn another DAW to the level of productivity I have with DP. I have taught Pro Tools and I fondly remember Studio Vision and Dr.T before that. At some point it is the knowledge of how to use the tool that is both the limiting factor and your greatest asset. My hat is off to those who can truly master more than one of these environments.

I think most of us here are in that boat. I think many of us have learned a great deal about the features we use daily and know little about some other features. DP really is huge. There are some features I have NEVER used. That's what makes UnicorNation a great place to hang out. For just about any feature that's new to you, there's someone here who uses it daily. This is a tremendous resource for me and many others. (Thank you again, James.)stephen1212b wrote:With DAW's the learning never ends. And of course we get to talk about beer from time to time.

This is what happens to threads that have no possible satisfactory resolution...now beer, there's a great resolution!Phil O wrote:Wait a minute. This thread has turned to talking about beer. How'd I miss that?
I bought my son-in-law a beer making kit for Christmas. Best thing I ever did. He's turning out some mighty fine brew!

A grand site indeed... and an inspirational sight - in fact Frodo's pic looked so good when I logged on after Sunday brunch that the trip to the studio has been put off for another day - I need a rest anyway.

To me, the fact that this thread hasn't spawned a trail of wish-lists and hankerings but has instead resulted in a discussion featuring our very own version of "man-talk", speaks volumes.
What's the current beef-list comprise?
4 complaints and half a dozen requests?
I'm still impressed by the sterling effort put in by the programmers in transforming a heartbreakingly disappointing and unnervingly flakey 5.1 into our cosy 5.11.
One lousy update. I bet it cost 'em much sleep.
I've not often seen such seriously, well, serious efforts from software houses.
Kudos to the Gods of MOTU.

Well I have some wishes: context-sensitive right clicking! Scroll-wheel usage! I'm forever right clicking. Ack!
some wants: A tr-x0x style step sequencer (yeah yeah I know it's almost there.). A drum brush that covers multiple notes. More intuitive looping of MIDI, and more looping options--multiple loops on multiple tracks? Maybe DP can already do this, still learning looping.
scriptable MIDI actions.
Also, a performance tab would be neat.

Everything would sound better with a beer plugin. If nothing else, problems won't appear to be nearly as great, and work would be a lot more fun, especially where right-clicking is concerned.Saintmatthew wrote:Perhaps DP needs a new beer plugin. Improved drum window/model 12 integration. It should automatically know that its talking to model 12, and have the names and keys automatically setup upon first instantiation. At the very least, have a model-12 drumkit option in addition to the GM-Rock and GM-Percussion options.
Default audio-out setup. Maybe this is there somewhere already, but I have to manually setup the audio output of each track I add. I wish it would lock on to the one I want--Audio Line Out, automatically.
the more I think about it, the more a live performance tab would be really nice. Doesn't have to follow the ableton live metaphor. Would take some thought. The website says that DP is already used live, so I'm sure the functionality is there--maybe it'd be as simple as exposing the functionality a little bit? The live performance I see is a combination of pre-made loops and adhoc composing. The composing in two styles--simultanous, eg playing a lead track, and real-time prep, eg setting up new sequences on headphone out while main interface out plays to the crowd.
The key is to make it easy to do from MIDI controllers. Perhaps some pre-defined consoles?
In terms of plugins, I'm not too concerned about guitar amps and the like, although I know every reviewer under the sun complained bitterly about the lack-thereof. One thing I think would be really cool would be a nice analog drum kick component for model-12. Again, realize that the other synths can be made to act like one. Also, maybe the model-12 already has this, but how about some round-robin functionality?
I also think that a mach-5 lite sampler should probably be rolled into DP. Nanosampler is great, but why not let me import other formats too. Thinking through that, why not expose that functionality used by the other formats. So I get something inbetween nanosampler and Kontact (having never used Mach-5).
Try Option + A as a key stroke with your specific audio tracks highlighted.crufty wrote:Also, these should be relatively easy:

Your other suggestions are great, but I think we're stuck for the moment, especially in the MAS sampler department.
