In theory, both L and DP support drag and drop into one of the main screens, TO or project. If both are open at once, would it not be reasonable to drag from DP --> desk --> L, arranging as you go?

Other theory from my experience with a few hundred MIDI based projects from KCS and CB on Atari -- you only really get around to a few of them. It's not a lot of overhead on any one song to dump a multi-track MIDI file from one app and import it to another, explode it, and then slice and drag the MIDI regions around into the layout you want to work with. Daunting and tedious if you do it for several hundred songs, but you will never need to, except in theory.

Hey, I'd even be prepared to let MOTU off the hook should it decide to retain its current pricing whilst adding features as opposed to Apple's strategy of adding whilst reducing.
Damn... I'd even consider paying more for an all-inclusive, VI and feature-laden version of DP that bundled MachFive, MSI and Ethno as part of the deal.
DP Pro does sound, well, pro. :?

Praying for a breakthrough as always, but this time it's on MOTU's behalf.
C'mon, Gods of MOTU, show those pesky apple farmers who's da man.
Please... I beg of you; I know you've been tweaking and innovating DP since 2006's DP5 release (18 months now?), holding onto your trump cards (yes, I believe you're hiding more than one), and skirting around the periphery with minute, erm.. miniscule... I mean... minor stability updates whilst attempting to reign in (pun, and a bad one at that) the juggernaut that is our future DP.
At this point, I'd expect that at the very least you'll bring the next realease date forward in an effort to soften the L... L... L... other app's blow.
This whole thing's messin' with my starved head.
Need MOTU fodder...
Well said fellow melbourian + 2 from mark
Yay! Thanks Mark. :D

Well, that's 2 copies of the new DP sold in Australia. :D

That's what I'd hoped would be possible.
The thing that threw me was that DP automatically creates clippings whenever one drags a piece of MIDI data to the desktop.
If L... L... L... the other app read these, it'd be a no-brainer, and perfect for someone like me!

Anyone want to try this?
Anyone done it?

Yeah, except in theory where the L... L... L... other app is concerned.
I have in fact been through the entire collection several times over the years, as most of these also came from CB on the ATARI.
I can attest to the immensity of the task, especially when one's MIDI hardware rig is altogether different, as the process involves selecting new, semi-suitable sounds and further sysex dumping.

I finally gave up on trying to keep the toons up to date, figuring I'll wait 'till I'm on a "keeper" system, or at least one where project completions are likely.
Thanks for the wise thoughts, Basey. :D

Could get messy if indeed it works. In theory, that is. :D
fair enough. though you can use freebie utilities like sysex librarian to deal with those. i know that at various stages, most daws seem to run into sysex issues. sysex editor lets you dump to and from the synth, so you could just save the sysex files in your project folder, and leave them out of the project itself, unless you're dealing with using them on the fly during a project.
Yet another app. that needs to be compatible and work, probably many years into the future.
Attempting to adhere to the KISS principle.
Good suggestion anyway, Kell.
kelldammit wrote:i generally go with smf type 0's, because they're pretty much universal, and all the tracks are lined up properly...so no issues importing them individually (especially if they're not quantized) either way, as long as it gets the job done...
Good call, Kell; thanks mate.
kelldammit wrote:i pretty much keep everything MIDI until the last possible moment...it makes it hard cause it can leaves a lot of options open, making it difficult to commit things one way or the other.
Aah... so it's not just me?
It's kinda handy to be able to store, say, 100 songs in a single folder amounting to no more than a few MB. :D

Have you seen the guitars he's been looking at lately?

Very true, Kell. It's the bane of my life - that's how true it is.
Oh well, we must focus where our passions lie, I suppose.

Thank you, Kell.
Y'know, I did wonder last night how a L... L... L... help area might go down in these parts.
I mean, if so many of us (and there are a few) also use L... L... the app, and DP resides and is often running concurrently on these machines, it stands to reason that the quality of advice on offer could be invaluable.
Further, it would negate the need for we cosy 'Cornies to venture into the Big Blue Unknown, if you know what I mean. :?

The 2 apps can really compliment each other this way (and a cheap way to get some of those Logic things like conv verb, and some of the nice synths).

BTW, has anyone tried mainstage - probably giving KORE a run for it's money as well?
This approach is verrry interesting... I have been lurking around a few Logic forums, and am noting lots of "fun" problems" folks have experienced and are continuning to deal with using Logic, problems I could certainly do without. I know DP, it works great. Logic as a "plug-in" for DP may be a superb way to go.

Fun problems is a amusing way to put it.

As to Logic as a plug in, given all the Logic Fever of the last few days I opened PRO 7 for the first time in a long time so I could play around with all the bundled synths.

And I got to tell you -- for the most part the VI's I have acquired in the last few years to use with Digital Performer ***OUTSHINE*** the ones bundled w logic in terms of sound quality/richness/flexibility etc.

ES1 and ES2 were quite nice.

Oddly Sculpture left me cold.

JMHO - FWIW - YMMV.

I've ordered a Logic Studio box for one reason only: I can't see one reason for not having it available in my studio.

This thread has gone for too long to stop now. I've heard some LP8 users describe the app as being snappy. Can anyone here confirm this?

Hello

It seems that one thing is keeping me not making it to Logic : with DP I have the choice to chose between mono or stereo output, with Logic it seems it's always stereo outputs, at least when runnning with Motu soundcards. Am I wrong ?

I see them saying on the Logic groups:

LP8 is slightly less snappy than LP7.2 but more snappy than LP7.01.

So they all expect there to be some tweaking and tuning.

With the expectation that Lp8.2 will be the SNAPPIEST LOGIC EVER!!!!!

On a personal note I spent the afternoon w my Logic Pro 7 and I guess I had some kind of breakthru -- I actually enjoyed using it. It is a nice adjunct to DP.

I went to my neighborhood Apple Store today to buy Logic Studio. They were out; they'd just sold the last full copy. (as opposed to upgrades, of which they had plenty)

So, I called another Apple store nearby, and they had one copy, but it was on hold until 6:00. I drove over just in case the guy didn't pick it up. He came in for it right before 6:00, so I missed out. What's with Apple? Why can't they stock their damn stores?

Oh well, it gave me another day or two to think about it. I noticed that it includes all FIVE jam packs. That's $500 right there. So, for the cost of the instruments (which I'm hoping I can also open in MachFive2) one can get the whole bundle. That right there pretty much made up my mind that I'm doing the right thing by getting it.

Still, it's so frustrating to get your hopes up, and then be disappointed that way. I was just sure that this evening I'd be comparing notes between DP and Logic, learning new things about BOTH.

Argh, that just happened to me to. My wife and I decided to finally get the MacBook Pro we've been wanting and every Apple Store in CA was sold out! The sales drone told us to call back every day at around 11am and then, if they had one, come to the store within a half hour to pick it up. I mean, isn't my $2500 enough? I have to work for this thing too?

We decided to order it online. :x

Same thing happened to me when I went to buy my MAcbook Pro last month. Every store was sold out, but right before one of the stores closed they got 2 in right when I walked in the door...so i grabbed one.

I see at http://www.motu.com/products/software/m ... fects.html that the Mach Five has all of these effects, including what I've been wanting, the convolution reverb and guitar amp sim. Why are they not included with DP? Honestly, I'm sick of mic'ing guitar cabs. The Johnson J-Station was fun for a while, but I'd rather just plug my guitar into the interface direct and use DP for processing. Preamp1 is cool, but it takes a lot to dial in the right kind of overdriven tone. Yet, MachFive has a built-in guitar amp modeler! What gives?

I don't run a commercial studio, so my livelihood doesn't depend upon very high-quality third-party plugs superior to Logic's. But as a project guy who does my own pre-production stuff and helps a few other local musicians with their own, I've got an extremely limited budget so I do need a one-stop solution that does it all. I'm hoping DP6 really can pull through for me...and hopefully sooner rather than later.
