Group grey hug! 8)

EDIT: I think at this point it'd be timely for MOTU to throw us another tidbit. Anything at all - just something to chew on for now.

C'mon MOTU, the Unicorns could do with a feed... please.

I begged my mom to buy Maypo... and then I tasted it when she finally did. My first real experience being sucked in by advertising for a product I didn't want once I got it (certainly not the last - my plugin collection is testimony to that). I didn't hate it but it wasn't something that my brothers and I ever asked for again. A little real maple syrup on Cream of Wheat tasted way better.

One hell of an advertising pitch, though, I'll give it that. Some of the plugin developers have learned that lesson well.

So we have a bunch of people here in their 60's? :)
I remember Maypo with not-so-fond memories. Ditto for Ovaltine. And I think I saw Ovaltine in the food store last week. I wonder if it's NOS?

I don't think people in their 60s drink Ovaltine - at least none I know. But, yea, it's still in stores. Perhaps it's there for my parents' generation - those who are left.

I understand you can still get 2" magnetic tape for the Ampex machines that my father helped build. Jay McKnight of MRL tells me that he still has good business selling calibration tapes. He expected to be out of that business years ago.

Right. My mother was an Ovaltiney. She can still sing the song. Has the decoder ring.

Now you're talkin'. I grew up on a ranch, and while we got the ads, I never saw half those products, not even on the shelves at our local grocery store. Once, on a trip into the city, I begged my parents to stop at a Jack-in-the-Box, because they'd been advertising it, and I'd never seen one. Well, I've eaten better stuff on a trail ride with a ranch-hand for a cook. (not a good comparison. Despite the movie stereotypes, Ranch food is often delicious and of the gourmet variety) But Nestles? Everybody had Nestles! Even Roy Rogers!

Bringing this back to music, you have to hand it to advertisers, the mushiness of the young brain, and the evil genius of a good commercial. I still don't know all the lyrics to my favorite rock bands but I sure know at least 40 commercial jingles and the catchy one slogans.

Pop pop fizz fizz
Oh what a relief it is.

They work hard so you don't have toooooo..

Only half a cup? Don't you like my coffee?

A friend from South Africa said he heard that one recently in Capetown. The Ipana ad too.

Late 60's/early 70s, the cigarette companies started doing weird lyrics, asymmetrical songs, non-rhyming lines. But weirdest of all, I still remember them word-for-word. It's spooky.

"Come up to the Koo—ool taste! The Koolest taste in any cigarette.
Take Kool's wide filters, rich tobacco, too... "

And I refuse to write out the rest, because it's humiliating that my mind was that permeable. But that's a lesson in jingle writing.

Then there was "Tangerine." Some Sinatra-like voice sings a jazz/pop standard that becomes a diet drink song: "There she goes, she's a Sego girl..."

Some ad jingles became ear-worms. Best ad jingle ever was (IMO) Coca-Cola's "I'd like to teach the world to sing" which, incidentally, played in the final moment of the Mad Men series, the product of a middle-aged ad executive who had undertaken a journey to find himself, and — if implications are correct — in the process found the world's greatest jingle.

Worst jingle ever? There's probably a lot of them. One has to be "Hold the pickles, hold the lettuce, special orders don't upset us," which absolutely ruined the Canon in D by Johann Ernst Pachelbel. To this day I cannot listen to it, and it was one of the more listenable works of the baroque. (Pachelbel's son, btw, immigrated to America and became one of the first organists and composers in the US)
