Journaling is off on that one. The 3rd is an external firewire drive used only for backup. Rock solid all the way. I use TechTool Pro AND Diskwarrior and everything is smooth. (I'm knocking on wood at the moment and backing up again on a VXA tape drive...)

Dual 1.8 G5, 80 gig system & VI drive plus 120 gig Audio / sample drive, both internal. I use a Glyph FW Net Drive 120 for backups.
When I first started using my G5 for recording, I would record to the Net Drive and DP would get kind of sluggish. The difference between recording to FW and recording to a second internal drive has been amazing for me. I can easily do 32 tracks on the internal, and I'm using lots of plug-ins (WAVES Ren Maxx, Altiverb, MW EQ, T Racks, etc) and have plenty of headroom. It's really the perfect system for me right now.
I highly recommend recording to an internal SATA drive instead of FW. Use FW for mirroring that drive.

Okay so:
If I have all apps/VIs on one internal drive
All audio on my second internal drive
Back-up with my external drives
Where would the best place to put my samples be (bear in mind I mainly use Kontakt and Sampletank2)? Internal drive 1, 2 or the external drives?
Any suggestions welcome
cheers

How my logic?
It seems to me that if you're using a sampling system that reads right off the drive that would put a lot a stress on the heads if you used the same drive for audio.
I'm no techy but if that's true, wouldn't it be best to use the main internal for programs, the second internal for audio and an external for the samples? Otherwise wouldn't the head be jumping all over to keep up with audio and reading samples?

been following this thread with interest.
am setting up a new quad G5 with 2 internal 250 gig sata drives. i will use one as my boot drive the other as my dedicated audio/video drive.
i run FCP pro/Soundtrack Pro/DP 4.61/Atmosphere/Mach 5/and a host of plugs.
i also have 2 LaCie extreme 500 gig firewire drives for video and storage along with a LaCie 120 g for temp storage and transport (to studios etc) along with an old 80 g firewire with samples etc on it.
i have 2 questions.
1.should i put the audio apps on the main boot drive with the other apps and record to the second or should i leave the audio app on the same drive as the audio files (2nd 250 g)? where would you put Mach 5?
2. does anyone know if the firewire 800 problem was solved with the G5s? the early ones ran 800 slower than 400.

On my G5 2.0- 2 internal 250 GB sata- main one programs, 2nd one current projects am working on-
6 external ata on 3 firewire towers (2 drives each) for storage and back up
http://stores.ebay.com/Superldg-Store
these enclosures have worked well for me with maxtor ata drives- I have 1 250 GB and 5 160 Gb maxtor drives in the array- by the way, some of these drives I've had for quite a while, since I had a dual 867 G4, and they are still going strong!

Very interesting topic, although I'm more of a hobbyist and not setup as
elaborate as most of you, here's where I'm at:
1.8 DP G5 2.5 ram
1- LaCie Firewire 160gig for incremental backups, it's also setup as a
bootable system repair disk.
2 - Internal 160 gig HD used as follows:
1st internal is partitioned into 2 sections:
1 large section for all audio storage and capture, the other smaller
section for all non-audio related files.
2nd internal is partitioned into 2 sections:
OSX 10.4.2 on one partition for all apps other than audio - graphic design, etc.
OSX 10.3.9 on one partition for Audio apps only. This is my dedicated
recording system. When I need to work on graphics I can just boot up
on my other system, this way I can keep the recording system clean and
mean.
