That’s precisely why I decided to migrate now. I don’t like to be more than one major OS revision behind.

If I can get things parked before tomorrow night's gig, and backed up (I'm behind on that), I may kick start the upgrade during my gig (as it takes hours and requires no initial intervention; only later is there a chance of user queries from the updater).

My biggest concern, as usual, is whether I get can Adobe Lightroom to authorize and work after the update. It gets harder each time. I refuse to join Adobe's subscription plan, since I rarely use their apps and so only perpetual licenses make sense for me for heavy duty high-priced stuff that isn't part of my daily (or even monthly) life.

Just download it from the App store, but don't install it if you don't need it now. It will remain listed in your App store purchases and be available to download in the future. Also remember to download any subsequent Combo updates.

How/where do you find it anymore? It's been removed from the App Store already. The only thing I can find now is the direct installer.

No. I want to download the installer and run it later. I can only find a way for it to immediately start installing (without even first quitting any apps). Up until today (if not earlier), there was a banner at the top for downloading the installer, and then running it when you like, just as with most other updates at the App Store.

How odd: my Mac at work provides a Download option for macOS High Sierra, even though it's already installed!

That same page (no longer a top banner, but still reachable by navigating the App Store), only provides an Install option on my home machine running Sierra!

I suspect this is an Apple bug and that most other users on this forum will not experience this issue. I wrote Apple about this years ago but got no response.

The problem is that they only recognize "accounts", not machines (as far as I can tell). Having a different machine at work, and running a different version of macOS on it, seems to often get the App Store confused about what I'm eligible for -- but only if it's an Apple product, and free.

My impression is also that we are allotted exactly one free copy of macOS. I don't understand why Apple thinks those of use who use computers at work, use the same computer for personal stuff at home! And they didn't let me create an alternate account for work when I tried; not enough unique info.

Well, I may just have to borrow an installer-loaded USB-drive from our I.T. department, which I don't think will be an issue. They didn't sanction High Sierra for internal use until 10.13.3. and my work machine has never shown any updates available after that (but the App Store page shows it is up to 10.13.6). I won't bother though as I'll need to go to Mojave at work.

I took a look at Mojave's features last night, and there are exactly zero that I'm remotely interested in, and in fact they are all features that I will want to immediately suppress. :-) I like High Sierra better than Sierra though -- overall, it is faster, more stable, and dare I say "snappier"? :-)

Wow... I needed to pay attention to this. My MacPro 5,1 in the studio is running Sierra and I'm pretty sure I won't want to do Mojave, so I'll try and see if I can get the installer. Maybe that's how it works? If you already have installed it they'll let you do a straight download, but if you're not yet on it, you have to update?

I'm going to fire up the studio Mac and hope I can get the option to download, else if anyone has the installer and can zip it, I'll be happy to park the file here and link in this thread.

If it's installed, it's purchased, and hence available on the App Store.

One thing I didn't mention about High Sierra is that it is the first version I can recall since OS 9 where the Finder actually crashes. Happens very rarely, but still, not entirely encouraging.

James.... I have the installer for Sierra v12.0.49. If you want it, please PM or email me and let me know where to send it. It's almost 5gB.

Did you mean Sierra or High Sierra? I think I already have Sierra and as luck would have it, I just launched the App Store, searched "High Sierra" and it appeared with the download option, so downloading that. I'm currently on Sierra but was concerned I may not be able to get the High Sierra installed once Mojave is in widespread use.

Interestingly enough, I got my first "non-compatible" update notice for Pages. Newest version requires Mojave. Ugh.

Finished the download of the High Sierra installer. Tricky bugger. It auto launches after the download completes and brings up a screen with a button to "Shut Down" and it will begin installing. I just went to the menu of the installer and chose Quit. No harm done, but I'm going to zip the installer and then delete the executable just to be on the safe side. LOL I'm paranoid it'll try and run again on next boot! :P

NOTE: I'm in the process now of uploading the zipped High Sierra installer to the file area of the server here. I'll post a URL later to assist anyone having difficulty getting it.

Wow, good thing we're getting so much input from different people, as it seems there is no uniform experience anymore!

Good to know that Pages is already updated for Mojave-only, as we'll probably all see those notices in the App Store within a week, with likely no further updates for Sierra or High Sierra. I depend on Pages the most of any office apps.
