Photos is different, for sure. The photo icons are a little oversized so you can't see as many photos all at once. The editing features are pretty cool (not applicable to videos). Slick. I can live with it. Now to launch DP and get back to work...

I see Aperture is gone from the App Store. It was never that great, but I depend on it to manage a zillion pictures. I look forward to hearing what Photo can do, but the previews were not encouraging.MIDI Life Crisis wrote:iPhoto is gone. THe app is still there, but it has the "invalid" symbol across it. "Photos" is the replacement. When you try to launch iPhoto it says it's out of date and directs you to the App Store where you are informed it is no longer available for you OS. It was kind of clunky to use anyway, so I'll check out the new Photos app and let you know how it goes.

Thanks for the reminder. I most definitely paid the shareware fee... so worth it! I enabled that option as I had forgotten to re-enable it.mikehalloran wrote:If you paid the $10 shareware fee for Trim Enabler, you can set the preferences so that a pop-up reminds you that you have to re-enable it after an OS update.
As for iPhoto, I have version 9.6.1 and it's still working. My iPhoto library resides on a different disk than my boot SSD disk. I'll have to see if the new Photos app can simply point to that iPhoto library or just how it works.

Re: Yosemite YUCK
It's pretty basic and won't replace Photoshop any time soon.
Also, Safari is much faster and seems much better behaved.
Steer Mouse is misbehaving and loosing it's connection to the system. I have to unplug and replug the MX Revolution (original) receiver to regain control of the mouse. That's not a new bug but it's worse under 10.10.3
The Photos library had to import the iPhoto library. I only use iPhoto to browse so I don't really care about that change.

Re: Yosemite YUCK
BTW, it appears you can use your exiting iPhoto library with Photos. Here's what I did.
I went into the prefs for Photos and it shows you where the default library is created. In my case I believe it's in the username/Pictures/ folder called "Photos Library". I quit the app then trashed the empty library.
Upon reopening Photos, a dilog will appear and Photos will scan attached disks for photo libraries including your already existing "iPhoto Library". Choose it in the dialog and Photos begins an updating process, which I'm currently in the middle of as I write this. I'm not sure if it then deletes the old "iPhotos Library" or simply creates a new "Photos Library" and leaves the exiting "iPhotos Library" alone. I hope it's the latter, as I'd like to continue using iPhoto until I feel comfortable with Photos.

Re: Yosemite YUCK
It automatically migrated my library from iPhoto (about 36GB) but it did NOT delete the old library. It is now marked as :Kind "Migrated Photo Library" when I get info. Searching the app store doesn't show iPhoto or Photos. My version of iPhoto was 9.6.
App store also shows a few updates OS X recovery and Lexmark printers as well as XCODE and iMovie.

Re: Yosemite YUCK
Weird. I check my updates and it never told me to update to that version. again, it's a photo browser for me and I don't do any serious work in it. I guess I'll delete the old iPhoto library and recover 36GB...James Steele wrote: As for iPhoto, I have version 9.6.1 and it's still working.

Re: Yosemite YUCK
Yep... it's all done and the original iPhoto Library is still there. I don't know if I'll use it based on just how gawdaful the start white background is. I seriously do NOT like this imitating of iOS 8 apple is doing everywhere. I just searched in vain for a way to change the background of Photos to a dark grey, etc. Something less jarring than WHITE! Ugh.
Not digging the "iOS-ization" of OS X.

Re: Yosemite YUCK
There was an app store iPhoto update that was recommended for improved compatibility before upgrading to 10.10.3. I wonder what happens if one doesn't get that update first.

Confusing. I haven't updated to 10.10.3 yet, but iPhoto is not in the App Store any more. I have 9.6.1. Was that the last update?

That update was 9.6.1 if I recall, and it no longer appears in the app store.bayswater wrote:Confusing. I haven't updated to 10.10.3 yet, but iPhoto is not in the App Store any more. I have 9.6.1. Was that the last update?

Take a look in the "Purchases" section of the App Store. iPhoto should be there, at least it is for me, but I'm on Mavericks.cuttime wrote:That update was 9.6.1 if I recall, and it no longer appears in the app store.bayswater wrote:Confusing. The purchase appears and there's an update button, but nothing happens when I hit it.

Right. Both iPhoto and Aperture are in the purchases and neither have updates.

Re: Yosemite YUCK
On two of my three installs, I ran the last updater, 9.6.1, for iPhoto and 3.6 for Aperture a week ago or so.
On one of them, I opened Photos and consolidated the library. When opening either of the old apps, this gave an error message saying I could still open but that the library had been moved over and I wouldn't be able to see recent edits etc.
On the second, I have not let Photos run. Aperture 3.6 and iPhoto 9.6.1 run fine.
On the third install, I hadn't run the iPhoto and Aperture updates. These were lined out and wouldn't open at all.
