So ... is it possible to JUST use an 1176 without a PREAMP before it? once again, dont laugh....

Wouldn't laugh at anyone trying to get right. Engineering is certainly my SECOND gig. You have to have some sort of pre if only at the board to get mic level enough gain to be worth a damn. I never tried it but I guess the 1176 could be used as the pre amp but I would think the levels would be too wierd to control. You would have to crank it just for the sake of gain and thus would NOT be using it as an effective compressor. I don't know I never tried that! LOL You may be inventing the next cool sound for vocal recording!

Yeah I didn't see in your profile till just now that you have the VT737. That's totally the way to go. the Avalon stuff is great class A type pre amps. Very real, very clean.

i love it...there are certainly different pre's out there and i'm noticing differences in each one....

Retail is $3500, but quite versatile!

I have gotten very acceptable results with a BLUE KIWI which I bought used (but mint) on eBay for $1300 and a BLUE Robbie Pre which I bought new for $700. Previously I had used a AT4033 with an TL Audio Dual-Valve Pre, which always sounded OK to me until I got the BLUE's. They are much more detailed and full-bodied.

I'm using an NTK for vocals right now. I've auditioned several mics and I stay with the NTk because it works quite well with my vocals. However, while auditioning mics, I tried the U87 on a friend and it sounded great with his voice but my voice sounded thin, so I opted not to buy one. The U87 is a very natural mic, so if your voice needs something extra, it might not be the best choice for you. I would suggest finding a place that will let you audition mics. For example, not guitar center because they tend not to let people return mics. The bottom line is that different people sound great on different mics. Audition as many as you can.

This is a weird one : SM 57 works great on vocals !

I've never really been a big fan of the U87 personally, but then again I'm definitely a tube and ribbon mic fan. For slightly more than a U87, the Soundelux U99 is a microphone I always recommend to my clients to look into. If you aren't into warm and creamy, you won't like it.... if you are, one of the best investments you can ever make IMHO.

I currently run an AKG 414 B/ULS and Audio Technica 4047sv in parallel with each other. If other words, I put them both up, make sure that they are perfectly in phase, and track vocals through both of them simultaneously. I then blend the result.

How is the Robbie? I've been dying to try one of those out!

The Robbie is great! I was laughing when I pulled the thing out, but after hearing it I didn't care how it looked. Very clean, yet warm. The only thing I didn't like about Robbie is no Signal Levels on it.... I like levels. Oh well, it sounded good and that's all that matters.
