Mac OSX auto-defrags files smaller than 20 MB
Yea, that's not quite true either. Only certain files.
... and on top of that, OS X does not defragment the free space on the drive. When you start up iDefrag on a drive using a recent version of OS X, the file fragmentation is not that bad compared to older versions, but the free space can be made up of 10s of thousands of non contiguous bits.

've never had any problems with iDefrag, (I agree on staying away from Norton) and it now works on the drive you run it from.
Yea, I don't like that part. I have used background de-fraggers in the past. Although I have never had a problem, having that process in the background affected performance.

I de-frag using TTP. I boot from a small partition on my TM drive (over eSATA) where I keep Disk Warrior, TTP and Disk Utility.

With two redundant Time Machine drives, if worst case should happen, I could restore so I do not worry.

I have experienced software corruption so bad that neither DiskWarrior nor TTP could restore the drive. In all cases, Apple's Disk Utility was able to repair and re-mount the drives - sometime it took multiple passes to do so..

I understand the concern, but this company has a good tack record for understanding and working with OS X. I've used it fairly regularly and had no issues. Even so, they advise a complete backup prior to defrag (as they always have)

mikehalloran wrote:As has been pointed out, PCIe solutions exist. Here is one that breaks the 3G SATA limit in the current Mac Pro. It's a PCIe card with up to 1T SSD on board. If you have that neeeeed for speeeeeed, here it is:
http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/SSD/PCIe ... lsior/RAID

If the next generation is ever released, SATA bus speed will likely be rated 6G like the 2011 iMacs.
That's tempting. At almost a TB, it really makes me want to pull the trigger and blow a hole in my credit card. I mean, it wouldn't break me to get it, but for nearly $1500, I think it would be wise to wait a generation or two. Those are going to come down in price FAST! I'd put a potential target on it at $350 for 1TB. That's when I'd feel like less of a sucker for buying it. Not that there's anything wrong with being an early bird. If you don't mind spending the money for that, then the reward ought to be quite well worth it. I'm just itching to put my whole VSL and Ivory libraries on it and watch them sizzle. Ivory, especially. No matter how fast the drive, I have yet to use Ivory without seeing the "slow drive" warning. It's not an untenable situation, but with a 1TB SSD, there would be NO situation… just smooth piano.

VSL, on the other hand, was designed for the mediocre drive speed that we are forced to live with most of the time. You can optimize it for the particular tracks that it's playing and speed up the streaming a great deal.

Oh, man… I'm really having to talk myself out of buying that PCI SSD card with 1TB of storage. I'm just going to put down the mouse, now…

Step away from the mouse, sir!!!!!

Shoosie, can't you increase the Ivory buffer to get smooth performance? I rarely had any slow disk messages with a Raptor... but wait, that was Ivory I. I can say Ivory II works perfectly with small buffer fed from an SSD...

Stay back from that mouse!!! Hands where I can see 'em.

Sir Markus:

That you and I were born just hours apart in the same year and month is one thing. Spooky stuff.

Consider this: I saw this thread and sent Mister Shoosh a private email suggesting that he put his mouse away. Then I come back to this thread and here you are saying the same thing.

The 3G solution is only $1,199.99 for 960G

http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/internal ... olid_State

How many of us spent that for a 1G hard drive in the early 1990s? How many of us spent that or more for the 20MB external to go with our Mac+ in 1986?

Hmmmmmm????? Let's not see all the same hands (including mine on both counts).

Yes, I am an evil, wicked enabler.

My advice, however, is free - and worth every cent! :koolaid:

That, and $750 for 384K RAM in 16K chips.

Oh yea, I remember that, too. In 1989, I spent $200 for two 1MB chips for my Plus and they accidentally sent me four (max RAM was 4MB). I called to return the overage and, when they told me to keep the other two modules, I felt I had scored huge.

I'm not worried about data corruption. It's the background processing I don't like.

Absolutely, I would never de-frag a system that had not been properly backed up. In OS 10.8.x, you can select multiple backup drives for Time Machine and it rotates through your list. Leave your 'puter on for two hours, you have two identical TM backups. I just don't worry about that anymore.
