Maybe some of you nice DP8 users could grab Licecap (a small cross platform animated gif recorder) and show some of the other general UI details with gifs inserted here. Stuff that maybe isn't shown on YouTube like track grouping, track management, busses, stem exporting, etc, etc, the basic stuff.

Thanks guys.

Really nice people here btw.

Yeah, we'll don't get used to it. LOL.

If you google images you'll find a bunch of DP windows. There are a bunch linked in this site as well. The UI IMO is wonderful. Great integration of elements in all windows. It's fun to use but not eye candy for its own sake. I like that.

Overheard in a restaurant:

CUSTOMER: "I'd like to try the free demo of your steak dinner".
WAITER: "Sorry, sir, we don't offer free meals".
CUSTOMER: "I can't believe it - a restaurant that doesn't let you
try out their food before you buy it."

ExpressMix, even though there's no demo, they have some really great videos up on their website here. Especially checkout the "10 Sequence Editor Power Tips" video, that'll really give you a good taste of DP in action:

http://www.motu.com/products/software/d ... er_content

In some ways, watching videos is even better then a demo. It'll show you what using DP is like once you get up to speed, and not just fumbling around with a demo for the first time. The videos are VERY well done, and really go in to how to perform various tasks effectively and efficiently.

The strength of DP is in how deep it is, and how well it works when you've used it for a while. Some programs are faster and easier to learn and get up to speed, but once you're there, it's not really all that fast or feature-driven. The problem with demos is that the first month of using a new program (of the magnitude of a DAW) really doesn't give you a good impression of how it will be over the long term. For instance, I learned Pro Tools very quickly, but when compared to DPs tool and feature set, it's nowhere as powerful, and just seems clunky in hindsight. But had I used a timed demo of both, I probably would have gone with PT because I was able to hit the ground running.

That said, MOTU may need to think about making a demo anyway, because Windows users are so used to it. Us Mac users are kinda used to not having demos. Many times, even software that's cross platform will only have a Windows demo, so demoing software doesn't typically enter our minds. It's why Apple doesn't offer demos either. Now that DP is cross platform, they're going to be dealing with some slightly different ideals in software usage, and they may want to think about bending to them slightly.

BTW: MLC, I know you're trying REALLY hard to keep your tongue at bay with this new crowd of Windows users. Just keep in mind that this forum is an absolutely VITAL part of MOTU's success. We're going to start getting an influx of people totally outside our normal software philosophy ideals. You don't necessarily always deal well with that. Maybe you should let other members deal with it. We don't want to scare away potential DP8 users. I don't mean to offend.

Even though AudioDesk only can do a fraction of what DP does it gives you a feel for what it's like.
I doubt anyone trying out various DAWs would end up choosing DP over the others on the basis of what they found in AudioDesk.

No offensive taken. Rest assured if I ever need a controlling daddy to tell me how they think I should post I'll be sure to place you on the waiting list.

I did! :)
I actually switched from Cubase to DP after trying out AudioDesk that came with my 2408mkII.
I thought the UI in DP looked like crap and told MOTU so but after a reassuring mail from MOTU that and interface refresh was coming in DP3 and that I was eligible for a free upgrade I went ahead and ordered DP2.72 :)
This was obviously some time ago and I'm not convinced it's a common occurrence. That's why I think they should have a DP LE or demo and ship it with every audio interface. Why they haven't got clearer info in their audio interface boxes about DP and and that you can upgrade from the included AudioDesk is beyond me.

Ah yes.. $600 I paid for PT Native. Then 9 months later, they wanted another 3 or 4 hundred to keep going.

*#%@ them.

If there had been a demo for Pro Tools (has there EVER been?), I would have passed on purchasing it because it doesn't do surround without another $2000+. They (Avid) lied to me at their event and told me it did, so that I would buy it that night.

At least DP does everything a DAW is supposed to do, and does it well. No hidden expenses, no "add ons", no price escalations because of what they perceive as your "level" of professionalism.

So, original poster, the reason might be that there is no good way to get into the deeper aspects of the program without the manual, which only comes in book form (another thing some people have a problem with).
